You're getting dynamic lumbar support on top of an already ergonomic design that will have your back (literally). Additionally, both the back height and headrest can be adjusted to better suit your shape and size.

Not only that, but you're also getting a 'Cool Gel M-Foam' seat cushion to keep your tush from overheating. And, we can attest that it really does mean "cool". The build quality is also top-notch which should help to erase any buyer's guilt if you don't like paying for a premium product. Sure, there are more affordable offerings on the market, but many of them won't offer the same quality and comfort as the Mavix M9.

The most comfortable budget gaming chair

The IKEA Markus chair is a great comfortable chair option for those of you who have to adhere to a smaller budget. It might not boast all of the 'gamer' style that some of the options on this list have, but, it'll still look right at home next to a gaming PC or games console, and not everyone wants their furniture to be emblazoned with game logos or garish colors.

You can adjust the Markus for height and tilt. The back can also be locked in place, or it can be reclined; plus the back is made of a mesh material to let the air through and provide better breathability, which is always good for those longer sitting sessions.

This is a solid chair that isn't going to cost you the earth. It even comes with an impressive 10-year guarantee for those who might be worried that a budget buy won't last.

The most comfortable premium gaming chair

Herman Miller's Embody was another option in its range of premium office chairs, only this time we can officially say this is a supremely comfortable gaming chair thanks to its partnership with Logitech G to create features and support that can aid in lengthy gaming sessions. We're still in the process of testing it, but already we're plenty impressed.

It features a backfit adjustment so that you can tune the chair to your spine, a smooth tilt that mimics your natural pivot points, and a seat with four breathable layers for comfort and airflow. As with most gaming and office chairs these days, height, arms, and seat depth are fully adjustable so that you can ensure the chair will be the best fit for your body.

There's also an extra layer of foam to better support your posture while you play, and the use of a new copper-infused cooling foam to prevent heat from building up. Color options are a tad restrictive and there's unfortunately no headrest for those that value extra support there. However, this is very much a premium piece of furniture and it's styled as such.

The most comfortable Razer gaming chair

The Razer Iskur is the brand's first venture into the gaming chair market, and a successful one at that. This high-quality seat is a fantastic option for fans of Razer who might want to match up their chair to an already Razer-filled setup, and it's comfortable despite being the most affordable chair under the brand.

It's a little on the firm side, we found, due to its high-density foam, but that only adds to its enhanced support. You're even getting built-in fully-sculpted lumbar support rather than a separate lumbar pillow that might ride up or otherwise not be as adjustable. It’s made of premium construction and quality materials too, so you don't have to worry about it falling apart after a couple of years.

One of the biggest issues is that this is really a chair built for smaller folk, so if you're above average height or weight then you may wish to look for an alternative. That said, if you want something comfy and fit for purpose, then the Razer Iskur may be the throne for you.

The most comfortable small gaming chair

Petite gamers often have to settle for those all-too-big gaming chairs that aren't the best ergonomically for shorter users. However, the Branch Verve chair has changed all that with its 16.5-inch lowest seat height. But, it's also more than just petite-friendly; it's also among the most comfortable gaming (or office) chairs we've sat on, with its plush seat and 3D fabric backrest that emulates that hammock feel.

Comfort aside, it's also very intuitive and easy to adjust, which means you don't have to struggle and grunt and swear your way through finding the most comfortable position. Best of all, it's incredibly stylish. Herman Miller is hard to beat when it comes to design, but we think that the Verve has done a pretty great job in keeping up. The most comfortable gaming chair with a wide seat

The Secretlab Titan Evo 2022 is a redesign of the original Secretlab Titan gaming chair. And, while it shares many of the same design elements, the updated model is far and away the most comfortable of the two. 

This will appeal more to folks who love to match their gaming furniture to a surrounding environment thanks to all of the aesthetic options you get, from simple faux leather or cloth to designs inspired by your favorite games or esports teams. Secretlab has also recently released its SoftWeave Plus Fabric finishes that come in different colors, one of which we're currently testing right now.

The racing-seat style gets a lot of criticism in other brands, but Secretlab has made this into one of the best ergonomic options for lengthy gaming sessions, with adjustable built-in lumbar support, 'cold-cured' memory foam padding, and a fully magnetic memory foam head pillow.

Is a gaming chair better than an office chair?

Both types of chairs can be absolute dreams for posture support and physical health when you're working or playing at home. Given both are aimed at supporting you while you sit for hours at a time, the features for positive health are present in both. Plus, as soon as you start upping the budget, the features and key elements start to look broadly similar. I often tended to think that gaming chairs can offer better bang for buck value as they cram in a lot more features, but - especially in recent years - the Venn diagrams have become more and more overlapped.

As a result, it may come down to which has the better fit and aesthetic for you - office chairs will still have a more muted design that's better for a home office, and gaming chairs can still look a bit'gamery'.

How to choose the most comfortable gaming chair for you

Much like any bit of large furniture, or tech - especially products that require time to get used to - finding the most comfortable chair for you will ultimately come from real-world testing and use. However, we're not ones to shy away from giving advice in terms of how best to pick products and hopefully get to that sacred place of ultimate comfort and proper posture support so you can game the night away.

First, start off with the size of the chair you need - and then individual dimensions. With the former, there are plenty of XL sizes of chairs for bigger players, and even some S size ranges to cater for more diminutive folks too. Beyond this, think about which part of the chair needs to be the biggest or smallest for your preferences. Then, as a further extension, think about whether you need a headrest or not, as well as the amount of adjustability and recline. My Herman Miller X Logitech Embody chair doesn't recline the most by any means, and it doesn't have a headrest, but I wouldn't change it for the world.

You'll have to think about budget, naturally, too. However, we would caveat that some of the expensive chairs we have tested really do go a long way to justifying their investment, and one's own physical health and posture can mean that paying more is worthwhile, especially in the long run. Plus, some chairs have warranties of five years, or even longer in some cases for extra peace of mind.

Think about materials too. A chair can have all the padding in the world but if it's a material you don't like the feel of then it's always going to be uncomfortable for you. On this note, mesh chairs are good for anyone that prioritizes breathability and heat-combat, while the soft faux leather materials that adorn many top chairs are less breathable but exceptional plush.

How we test gaming chairs

When it comes to making sure a gaming chair is up to snuff, we test every aspect and feature. After all, it needs to fit a gamer’s needs, from comfortable for long gaming sessions to fitting the right look. 

General comfort takes a little longer to test. While first impressions are important, a gaming chair needs to be just as comfortable to sit in after four hours as it is after the first. 

We consider the materials used. Some use more premium ones such as breathable fabric. And, though that might seem like a minor detail, it can make a difference when it comes to how comfortable a gaming chair actually is. 

We take ergonomics into account since it’s a key part of a chair’s comfort, as well as its adjustability. We look at how far back the seat goes, what all is adjustable from armrests to lumbar pillows, and how easy it is to make adjustments. Last but not least, we consider any additional features that might set a gaming chair apart. 

Once we’ve examined every factor, we take a holistic look at the chair we’re testing along with its price to see if it’s worth the investment and who might benefit from using that particular gaming chair.
