His Three Daughters

Release date: September 20
Runtime: 101 minutes
Age rating: R (US) / 15 (UK)
Cast: Elizabeth Olsen, Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne, and Joven Adepo
Director: Azazel Jacobs
Rotten Tomatoes (RT) score: 98% (critics); TBC (audience)

After earning rave reviews on the 2023 film festival circuit, Netflix picked up this hard-hitting comedy drama that'll have you laughing one minute and bawling your eyes out the next. Olsen, Coon, and Lyonne play the titular (and estranged) offspring, who reunite at their dying father's home to spend three final days with him before his inevitable passing. Shocking no-one, the trio's differing worldviews, temperaments, and personalities collide across said 72-hour period.

Critics far and wide have praise the lead actors' performances in this tear-jerking and awkwardly comical flick. Such is their potent on-screen chemistry and towering individual displays, don't be surprised if any or all of Olsen, Coon, and Lyonne find themselves up for multiple gongs on the 2025 awards circuit.

Uglies

Watch On

Release date: September 13
Runtime: 100 minutes
Age rating: PG-13 (US) / 12 (UK)
Cast: Joey King, Keith Powers, Chase Stokes, Brianne Tju, Jan Luis Castellanos, Charmin Lee, and Laverne Cox
Director: McG
RT score: 16% (critics); 48% (audience)

Based on Scott Westerfeld's sci-fi novel of the same name, Uglies is set a neo-futuristic world where, once they reach 16 years of age, teens are forced to undergo cosmetic surgery to turn them into beautiful/handsome (but incredibly vain) individuals. King tackles the lead role of Tally, who is eager to undergo her own operation and become part of her colony's adult society. That's the case, anyway, until her long-time friend runs away; an incident that not only forces Tally to go after her, but also threatens to turn her world upside down.

Reviewers have slammed Uglies, with its "stilted dialog", lackluster and cliched young-adult narrative, and "iffy special effects" suggesting you won't want to waste your time with this one.

Rebel Ridge

Release date: September 6
Runtime: 131 minutes
Age rating: R (US) / 15 (UK)
Cast: Aaron Pierre, Don Johnson, AnnaSophia Robb, David Denman, Emory Cohen, Steve Zissis, Zsané Jhé, Dana Lee, and James Cromwell
Director: Jeremy Saulnier
RT score: 96% (critics); 69% (audience)

A rare but incredibly welcome triumph on the Netflix Movie Original front, this movie offering from writer-director Saulnier has been hailed by critics as not only one of the best Netflix films of the year, but also in the streamer's first-party project history.

Anchored by star turns from leading man Pierre and Johnson's central antagonist, Rebel Ridge follows Terry Richmond (Pierre), a US Marine who goes toe-to-toe with the local police force – one led by Johnson's Sandy Burnne – after his life savings are seized because he aims to use them to bail his cousin out of jail. Cue plenty of tense conversations and some explosive action set-pieces in the first of September's new Netflix movies from the streaming giant.

We viewed Rebel Ridge as a "modern retelling of iconic 80s action film Rambo" when its first trailer arrived, and it seems many critics agree with us. We didn't expect it to be as pulsating and bone-breaking, beautifully shot, fantastically acted, and thematically relevant to 21st century sociopolitical issues, though, as it is. A magnificent movie that demands your attention ASAP.

New Netflix movies: August

The Deliverance

The Deliverance | Lee Daniels | Official Trailer | Netflix - YouTube The Deliverance | Lee Daniels | Official Trailer | Netflix - YouTube
Watch On

Release date: August 30
Runtime: 112 minutes
Age rating: R (US) / 15 (UK)
Cast: Andra Day, Glenn Close, Mo’Nique, Anthony B. Jenkins, Miss Lawrence, Demi Singleton, Tasha Smith, Omar Epps, Caleb McLaughlin, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor
Director: Lee Daniels
RT score: 35% (critics); 41% (audience)

The latest horror flick to land on Netflix, The Deliverance stars Day as Ebony, a single mom struggling to fight off her personal demons despite the promise of a fresh start by moving into a new home with her three kids. It isn't long before, in The Exorcist-like fashion, supernatural occurrences threaten the family's newfound peace and endanger Ebony's children.

Nobody has responded kindly to Daniels' latest cinematic effort, with many suggesting it's not as terrifying or thematically impactful as it should be. The last of August's new Netflix movies, then, is unlikely to scratch that paranormal horror itch you've got.
