The best movies on Stan: a list of the top films streaming in Australia now

Feel like watching something that'll put a tingle in your spine? Well, look no further, because Stan has a large selection of horror films that should please even the most hardened gore-hound. These are some of the best.

Relic

A scary film in the vein of Hereditary, the Stan Original Australian film Relic is an extremely slow-burn horror movie in which three generations of women must confront the manifestation of the eldest's dementia. Not exactly light-hearted viewing, but worth it for its eerie atmosphere (someone tell this family to switch the bloody lights on!) and excellent performances across the board, particularly from English actress Emily Mortimer, who impressively delivers a pitch-perfect Aussie accent (get ready to hear her say "Mum?" a whole lot).

The Descent

Not one for claustrophobic types, The Descent follows a caving expedition that goes horribly wrong, leaving a group of women to fend for themselves against some truly terrifying cave-dwelling creatures. An absolute masterpiece of terror, The Descent is one of the best horror movies to come out of the UK.

IMDB Rating: 7.2, Rotten Tomatoes: 85%

Scream

The late, great horror director Wes Craven had a habit of making a game-changing fright flick at least once per decade. In the '70s, it was The Last House on the Left. In the '80s, he birthed the horror icon Freddy Kruger in A Nightmare on Elm Street. The kids of the '90s, however, had grown accustomed to the usual horror tropes, which is why Craven's self-aware slasher Scream became such a sensation. The characters in this knew they were in a horror film, which allowed the movie to exploit the genre's rules at every turn. And, once you've finished watching the first entry, make sure to check out Scream 2-4, also available on Stan.

IMDB Rating: 7.2, Rotten Tomatoes: 79%

Wolf Creek

Loosely inspired by actual events, Wolf Creek gave birth to Australia's first real horror icon in Mick Taylor (John Jarratt), a sadistic bushman who enjoys nothing more than hunting and killing tourists in the middle of the Outback. Once you've watched this, check out its sequel, Wolf Creek 2, as well as the incredible Stan Original series.

IMDB Rating: 6.3, Rotten Tomatoes: 53%

Friday the 13th series

Jason looks on onimously

If you're in the mood for some creative slashing mayhem, almost every entry in the Friday the 13th series is now available to stream on Stan (outside of the space-bound sequel Jason X). The film that kicked off the camp slasher craze, Friday the 13th delivers big scares and gory kills in equal measure, with a whodunnit approach that doesn't actually feature the series' chief killer Jason Voorhees as its main antagonist. Of course, Jason would take centre stage in the film's sequel, and (almost) every entry after that.

IMDB Rating: 6.4, Rotten Tomatoes: 63%

Halloween series

Halloween

If you prefer nerve-jangling suspense over gore, then Halloween might be more your speed. It follows the exploits of unkillable boogeyman Michael Myers, who escaped an asylum after many years in order to wreak havoc on babysitting population of his hometown, Haddonfield. The first entry from master of horror John Carpenter is undoubtedly the best in the series, however, there are plenty of scares to be had throughout the franchise, of which several films are available to stream right now on Stan.

IMDB Rating: 7.7, Rotten Tomatoes: 96%
