Black Friday deals are starting to crop up everywhere, with the sales event of the year officially kicking off this week. Smartphones from Apple, Samsung, Google and other major brands are discounted from retailers all across Australia, with low prices expected to continue through to Cyber Monday on December 2.

So far, generous discounts have been applied to new and older generation Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel handsets, while iPhone deals aren't as common (though we are still seeing many of them). Amazon's Black Friday sales are leading the excitement on smartphones, though JB Hi-Fi and some telcos are also offering some noticeable price drops.

We’ll be checking in with the biggest retailers over the next week as we head straight for Black Friday and Cyber Monday, so bookmark this page and check back in now and again if you’re on the lookout for a new smartphone at a discounted price.

iPhone 16 Pro (256GB): was AU$1,799 now AU$500 (plus plan costs) at Vodafone
Save AU$1,299

The iPhone 16 Pro is the best phone that Apple makes, offering impressive cameras, a gorgeous display, and access to Apple Intelligence features. Vodafone is offering this discount when you purchase the phone on a AU$79 per month plan spanning a 36-month repayment period. Other storage capacity options and colourways have received the same discount. In our iPhone 16 Pro review, the handset received a TechRadar Best in Class seal of approval. This deal also applies to the smaller option, the iPhone 16 Pro Max .

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max (1TB, Blue Titanium)
Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max (1TB, Blue Titanium): was AU$2,663.10 now AU$2,319 at Amazon

Save AU$344.10

Say you want a high-end iPhone with a lot of storage, but don't want the latest Pro Max – this deal is for you. The iPhone 15 Pro Max 1TB option is currently discounted at Amazon, perfect for if you don't want to worry about running out of space for your photos, videos and apps. Other storage and colour options are not currently discounted at Amazon.

Apple iPhone 14 Plus (512GB)
Apple iPhone 14 Plus (512GB): was AU$1,797 now AU$1,647 at JB Hi-Fi

Save AU$150

Though the iPhone 14 Plus is now two generations old, don't be too worried about ongoing software support. The iPhone 14 Plus is expected to be supported until 2029, making it a fairly decent purchase if you want a large phone with a nice screen without spending too much. The 512GB model is currently discounted across all colourways, but not other storage options

Apple iPhone 14 (128GB, Blue)
Apple iPhone 14 (128GB, Blue): was AU$1,299 now AU$1,047 at Amazon

Save AU$252

Two generations old and still a nice value pick for a smartphone, the iPhone 14 128GB option is currently AU$2 cheaper from Amazon than it is from Apple directly – but only for the blue model. While being mostly a minor upgrade to the iPhone 13, the 14 did ship with a new heat dissipation system and a better TrueDepth camera, which we complimented in our review.

Apple iPhone 13 (128GB)
Apple iPhone 13 (128GB): was AU$877 now AU$747 at JB Hi-Fi

Save AU$130

The iPhone 13 is expected to be supported until 2028, and although it's now three generations old, it's a welcome option as an entry-point and affordable way to get into the Apple ecosystem. The cameras and display may seem a little dated compared to newer iPhones, and perhaps you'll have Dynamic Island envy, but it's a nice price that's only just above the cost of a new iPhone SE at AU$719.

Google Pixel phones

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL (128GB)
Google Pixel 9 Pro XL (128GB): was AU$1,847 now AU$1,447 at JB Hi-Fi

Save AU$400

Only having been revealed back in August, the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL is already discounted, making it exceptionally attractive, particularly if you want the best non-foldable Pixel. The 9 Pro XL comes with the Tensor G4 chip and Google's latest suite of AI features for a phone, along with a gorgeous screen and a brilliant array of cameras. In our Google Pixel 9 Pro XL review, the phone received a Techradar Recommends seal of approval, though we weren't too thrilled about the high price. With a discount however, it's hard to turn away from. Only the Pixel 9 Pro XL is available from JB Hi-FI with the 128GB option and as such is the only one with this low price, however 256GB, 512GB and 1TB options across all colourways are also discounted.

Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold 5G (256GB)
Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold 5G (256GB): was AU$2,697 now AU$2,197 at JB Hi-Fi

Save AU$500

Google's first foldable to come to Australia has been discounted just three months after releasing down under. The phone includes many of the same great specs as the Pixel 9 Pro XL, though with slightly less powerful cameras and a lower fast charging capacity, but among the book-style foldables on offer right now, it's definitely one to consider. We loved the phone in our review.

Google Pixel 9 (128GB)
Google Pixel 9 (128GB): was AU$1,349 now AU$1,047 at JB Hi-Fi

Save AU$300

Google's cheapest Pixel 9 option is a very competent phone that offers brilliant camera performance and the company's suite of AI-powered features (including the very cool Magic Eraser). It's powered by the same Tensor G4 chip that's in the Pro models, and though the screen is slightly lower spec, it's still gorgeous. Also AU$1,049 from the Google Store.

Google Pixel 8a 5G (128GB)
Google Pixel 8a 5G (128GB): was AU$849 now AU$647 at JB Hi-Fi

Save AU$202

Google's cheap entry-point Pixel smartphone of 2024, the Pixel 8a, has received a discount in the lead-up to Black Friday, making it a particularly attractive smartphone to pick up if you don't want to go over the AU$1,000 price point. The Obsidian, Porcelain, and Bay coloured devices are all discounted from JB Hi-Fi, each offering Google's brilliant array of cameras, the Tensor G3 chip, and 128GB storage capacity. We loved the phone in our review and it earned a Techradar Recommends seal of approval, though the battery life isn't great and it is underpowered compared to Snapdragon-powered alternatives. Also available from Google directly for AU$649.

Samsung Galaxy phones

Samsung Galaxy S24 FE 5G (128GB)
Samsung Galaxy S24 FE 5G (128GB): was AU$1,098 now AU$598.32 at Optus

Save AU500.40

The Samsung Galaxy S24 FE was released October 2024 as a cheap entry-point to the Galaxy S24 range of devices, featuring the brand's Galaxy AI suite of features and a gorgeous sharp display. In Techradar's review of the device, we loved its long battery life, strong performance and gorgeous display, though we thought that the iPhone-like design probably won't be a winner for everyone and that some of the phone's best features are hidden away. With this Optus deal, you'll need to sign up for an eligible plan over a 24-month or 36-month period to activate the monthly saving. Plan costs start at AU$52 per month.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra (256GB)
Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra (256GB): was AU$2,187 now AU$1,787 at JB Hi-Fi

Save AU$400

Samsung's flagship smartphone has received an attractive price drop in the lead-up to Black Friday. For a limited time, you can score a huge 24% off the 256GB model Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra in Titanium Grey. We may yet see the price drop even more in November and there's no guarantee that this deal will stick around for long. All colourways of the 256GB model are discounted, but not the 512GB and 1TB models.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus (256GB)
Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus (256GB): was AU$1,699 now AU$1,299 at Best Mobile Phone

Save AU$400

The middle child of the Samsung Galaxy family was quite impressive when it debuted in January 2024, boasting a gorgeous QHD+ display, class-leading battery life and the same suite of AI features as those on the S24 Ultra. We loved it in our review, and with discount, it's an especially attractive phone to pick up.

Samsung Galaxy A55 (128GB, Awesome Navy)
Samsung Galaxy A55 (128GB, Awesome Navy): was AU$699 now AU$547 at Amazon

Save AU$149

Samsung's budget handsets are excellent, and the Galaxy A55 is such a nice smartphone that it sits well beside the Galaxy S24 range – and with more than AU$100 slashed from the price of the Awesome Navy model, it might be time to pick this phone up if you're after an affordable phone. It's not the lowest price we've ever seen for the handset (we've previously seen it as low as AU$543) but it's still a nice price to pay for one of 2024's best phones. Just keep in mind we may yet see it cheaper.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 (128GB, Pink)
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 (128GB, Pink): was AU$2,749 now AU$2,330 at Amazon

Save AU$419

Despite only being revealed in July 2024, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 has been no stranger to discounts, and the pink 256GB model is currently discounted by 15%. It’s an attractive deal if you want a large phone that was launched relatively recently, and it features a powerful array of cameras and brilliant processing power. There’s no guarantee that the deal will last long and there may be larger discounts as we approach Black Friday.

Samsung Galaxy S23 (128GB)
Samsung Galaxy S23 (128GB): was AU$1,199 now AU$838 at Amazon

Save AU$361

Though it's Samsung's entry-level Galaxy S smartphone from 2023, it's still a more than capable phone if you're looking for a new handset in 2023. Its perfect size and nice redesign led our compliments of the S23 in our review.

Other phone deals

Oppo Reno12 5G (256GB)
Oppo Reno12 5G (256GB): was AU$799 now AU$647 at Amazon

Save AU$152

A budget to mid-range smartphone that gives the Google Pixel 8a a run for its money, the Oppo Reno 12 is well worth considering if you want a cheap handset with tonnes of power but don't want to spend too much. It comes with a Dimensity 7300 CPU and is underpinned by 12GB RAM, with the model on sale boasting 256GB storage capacity. We liked the phone in our review of it, though the design could be seen as a little cheap, its AI features are slow, and there's quite a bit of bloatware.

Motorola Edge 50 Neo (256GB)
Motorola Edge 50 Neo (256GB): was AU$699 now AU$348 at JB Hi-Fi

Save AU$351

Motorola's mid-range Edge 50 option, the Neo is available with more than half the price slashed off. While TechRadar hasn't reviewed the Neo, we thought quite highly of its cheaper sibling, the Fusion, complimenting it for its stylish and quality build, its long-lasting battery and its inclusion of a high capacity charger. It did struggle with some high-performance tasks, however. Available in Pantone Poinciana and Pantone Grisaille.

Nothing Phone (2a)
Nothing Phone (2a): was AU$599 now AU$507.34 at Amazon

Save AU$91.36

A competitively-priced Android smartphone with a distinctive and attractive style, the Nothing Phone (2a) offers up fairly great performance if you're shopping below the mid-range point. The phone received our TechRadar Recommends seal of approval in our Nothing Phone 2a review.

CMF by Nothing Phone 1 (128GB)
CMF by Nothing Phone 1 (128GB): was AU$399 now AU$333 at Amazon

Save AU$66

Nothing's sub-brand CMF is focused on easily upgradeable smartphones, with the first model built to be pulled apart, upgraded and self-repaired. It's a fairly cheap handset to begin with but you do get some nice specs with the initial purchase, including a 120Hz, AMOLED display, 128GB base storage and 8GB RAM on the discounted model, along with a satisfying 50MP main camera. All colourways are currently discounted on Amazon.

When will the best Black Friday phone deals start in 2024?

Black Friday deals go live from midnight (12am) AEDT on Friday, November 29, 2024. As we approach the day however, we do expect mobile carriers and manufacturers to either start deals early, or at least drip feed us information as to what to expect.

If you’re after a phone deal for Black Friday, you may not want to wait that long. Phone makers and mobile carriers love to offer great deals before the official start of Black Friday, so if you have your eye on something with a price drop, it may be wise to jump on it right away.

Where will the best Black Friday phone deals be?

We'll be rounding up all the best Black Friday phone deals right here on this page, so bookmark it and check in regularly for recommendations. As a quick overview, here are the retailers that we're expecting to feature the best phone deals up through Black Friday.

Amazon: hot deals year round set to get even better for Black Friday
eBay Australia: a one stop shop for a lot of hot offers
JB Hi-Fi: gift cards with big-ticket phones, and discounts on others
Optus: trade-in deals and free devices
Telstra: trade-in deals on Australia's largest mobile network provider

What Black Friday phone deals do we expect to see in 2024?

For Black Friday phone deal hunters, there is good news and bad news. The good news is that there are plenty of deals, and almost every phone you can imagine goes on sale somewhere.

But if you're an iPhone fan, the bad news is Apple devices rarely see great discounts, although some mobile carriers do offer deals in return for signing up to a long contract agreement. In fact, the best deals you'll find will likely be part of a contract agreement, but if you were already shopping for service, make the carrier give you a Black Friday phone deal.

Smaller phone makers like Motorola are more likely to offer discounts than Samsung, which just launched a new foldable family, and Apple, which keeps its prices steady. Google has also been known to drop the price on Pixel phones for Black Friday in the past. Third-party retailers will be a good bet too, including The Good Guys and JB Hi-Fi.
