Vivo’s X80 series is a much-awaited camera-centric flagship smartphone that has just been introduced in China. While the X series has been making its presence felt in the international markets thanks to its amazing camera performances and the X80 lineup seems to be no exception.
This year though it’s slightly more important for Vivo as the company in collaboration with MediaTek has developed a custom image and display processor called Vivo V1 Plus. This chipset is aimed at offering enhanced compatibility and picture optimization.
The Vivo X80 series includes two devices this time around. At the base is the stock variant – Vivo X80 and then there is the Vivo X80 Pro.
The Vivo X80 Pro comes in two flavours – Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or MediaTek Dimensity 9000 at the core. We’ve seen almost all the leading smartphone makers deploy this dual chipset strategy and have decided to offer a MediaTek variant of their premium phones. While this is a big win for MediaTek and speaks volumes of what its chipsets have been able to achieve, for Qualcomm though it is a matter of concern – however, more on that later.
Talking about the X80 Pro, the phone comes with a large 6.78-inch LTPO OLED screen with QHD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. It is powered by a 4,700mAh battery with support for 80W wired charging and 50W wireless charging.
The phone also offers a larger scanning area for the in-display fingerprint sensor – similar to the Vivo X Note and the iQoo 9 Pro. This fingerprint scanner can scan up to two fingers at the same time for added security.
In terms of optics, the phone has a quad rear camera setup which includes a 50MP Isocell GNV sensor, a 48MP IMX598 ultrawide camera, a 12MP 2x telephoto lens, and an 8MP 5x periscope shooter. The 12MP telephoto sensor also comes with Gimbal stabilization – which we have seen in the previous iterations of Vivo flagships. The Zeiss collaboration is still there.
There is a 32MP selfie camera housed under a hole-punch cutout at the front. It is an IP68 certified device and comes with dual stereo speakers, NFC and more.
The Vivo X80 though is similar to the Pro sibling, however, comes with obvious tradeoffs. It comes with a 6.78-inches E5 OLED panel with FHD+ resolution and a 120 Hz refresh rate. The Vivo X80 has a 4500 mAh battery with 80W fast charging and an in-display fingerprint sensor.
It is powered by the Dimensity 9000 SoC and comes with a 50MP primary sensor, a 12MP ultrawide camera, and a 2x 12MP telephoto lens. Instead of the Gimbal stabilization, the X80 comes with OIS. It still has the V1 Plus imaging chip as its premium sibling.
The price of the Vivo X80 starts at CNY 3699 for the 8GB/128GB variant and goes all the way up to CNY 4,899 for the 12GB/512GB variant. The Vivo X80 Pro is pricier and comes in three variants 8GB/256GB, 12GB/ 256GB and 12GB/512 GB which are priced at CNY 5499, CNY 5999 and CNY 6699. The Dimensity 9000 powered variant is only available in 12GB/256GB and 12GB/512GB options and is available at the same price.
Global debut on May 8, India launch on cards as well
The Vivo X80 series has been confirmed to launch internationally on May 8. Since this time around, the company hasn’t introduced a Pro Plus variant, it is likely to launch both the Vivo X80 Pro and Vivo X80 phones in the international markets.
The phones have been rumoured to launch in India as well. Though the company hasn’t announced the India launch date yet, however, we can expect the phones to be introduced in India around the same time.
