Young actress Keerthy Suresh is a leading star in South Indian movies. She is now awaiting the theatrical release of the big-ticket Telugu flick Sarkaru Vaari Paata, in which she Mahesh Babu is male lead. It is scheduled to release in theatres on May 12. However, her long-delayed Tamil Saani Kaayidham has now been confirmed to make it to the OTT platform directly ahead of it.
Saani Kaayidham will start streaming on Amazon Prime Video from May 6, the streamer announced today.
The film, which will be available in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam on Prime Video, is directed by Arun Matheswaran and also stars actor-filmmaker Selvaraghavan.
The Telugu version is named Chinni, and the Malayalam version retains the Tamil title. Saani Kaayidham translates to cow dung paper.
The streamer also put out the film's trailer today. In the trailer, Keerthy Suresh, in a deglamorised look, talks about taking revenge for criminal wrongs and injustice meted out on apparently her family.
A hard-hitting realistic story
The streamer more or less has given out the entire story of the film. Keerthy plays a constable, living with her five year old daughter Dhanna and her husband Mari, who is a worker in a rice mill. He is said to be involved in local politics, and this apparently is resented by his employers. There is also a caste angle to it. The mill owners are from 'higher caste' while Mari and his family are Dalits. As it happens, in a heinous turn of events, Mari along with his daughter are set ablaze to death and Ponni is raped.
She knocks on the doors of justice, but nothing really works. A devastated Ponni, along with her step brother Sangaiya (Selvaraghavan) set out to avenge the atrocities committed on her and family.
As you can see, the full story is nothing new, but perhaps its treatment is what may work for it.
"Here’s a gritty action drama woven around the theme of revenge; a story about a woman who is on a mission to seek vengeance. Every story has an audience and I am thrilled that through the reach of Amazon Prime Video I can take Saani Kaayidham to a global audience across 240 countries and territories," the director Matheswaran said in a press statement put out by the streamer.
Matheswaran said his aim is to present conventional stories in unconventional formats, bringing out raw and edgy elements.
Manish Menghani, head, content licensing, Amazon Prime Video, India, said Saani Kaayidham is a hard-hitting story. "The film’s gripping narrative and brilliant performances will keep action drama fans hooked till the end."
For Selvaraghavan, this is the second outing as actor. He was seen recently in the Tamil film Beast, which however has turned out to be a failure.
