Still a fantastic mid-range running watch

Verdict

The Forerunner 245 is a brilliant running tool that’s still very competitive despite it not having all the bells and whistles of Garmin’s more premium offerings.

In fact, if you don’t care about some of the more complex running dynamics we’re seeing offered on newer models such as the Garmin Forerunner 945, then this model will probably be a better fit for you. It definitely delivers enough training insights to satisfy runners at most levels.

With good battery life, a comfortable fit and and all the basics covered, this is also a strong choice for almost anyone looking to track their general fitness better than a basic activity tracker would allow.

Who's this for?

The Forerunner 245 is a great tool for those who take performance more seriously than casual fitness runners, but still, it’s probably not ideal for the more adventurous runners out there. The tools on offer here are probably better suited to road runners than trailers, for instance. For that, it might be best to hit up the Fenix series.

Should you buy it?

If running is your fitness focus and you don't need the more advanced features found on top-end models - or can't afford the steep price that goes with them - then the Forerunner 245 is a very solid choice.

And while it's at its best for runners, the Garmin Forerunner 245 is also a capable training companion for most gym-goers and other types of fitness fans who aren't trying to train or perform at the highest of levels.

Competition

There are a number of alternative options, such as the following:

Polar Ignite

Setting a new benchmark for fitness watches that recommend workouts and track sleep and recovery, the Polar ignite is a nifty little device that offers a lot of features for just $229.95 / £174.50 / AU$349.

Recovery insights are deep and digestible, while the adaptive workout recommendations are as useful, easy to follow and motivational as we’ve seen. This is a serious all-round fitness tool at a very reasonable price.
