Why you can trust TechRadar
The Oppo A9 2020 is better than it initially appears in some areas, and worse in others. Only two of its four cameras are particularly useful, and the glassy-looking design is quite clearly all-plastic when you pick the phone up.
However, this phone is a dream to live with. Its battery outlasts those of just about every high-end Android phone, and if you can avoid obsessing over its lower screen resolution, the Oppo A9 2020 is still a pro at more challenging jobs.
The large screen is perfect for video and gaming, and the stereo speakers are some of the better sounding at the price. We can name a handful of ways to improve this phone, but add them together and you get the Oppo Reno Z. And that tells you how well tailored the Oppo A9 2020 is to its price. It’s one of our lower cost favorites.
Who's this for?
The Oppo A9 2020 is a great phone for feature hounds who don’t want to spend too much money. It’s also one of the better affordable phones for those who stream a lot of video.
Its display may not be the most advanced around, but it is big and bright, and the battery can take the punishment of the odd voyage down a YouTube rabbit hole.
Should you buy it?
The appeal of the Oppo A9 2020 varies between countries. Price is crucial here, as the closer it gets to phones like the Moto G8 Plus and Xiaomi Mi 9T, the more its low-res screen stands out. This is a great buy in the UK in particular, where its £220 price sees it sell for less than most of its obvious rivals.
