The US has publicly acknowledged for the first time that it operates weapons in orbit, a declaration made during a defense conference near Washington.

No detail was offered about the systems' design, deployment date, testing record, or intended battlefield use.

That silence has left analysts to speculate about what the weapons actually are and how they might function.

“We are not going to talk about the specifics of what we're doing, whether we've tested it, not tested it, or anything else,” said Troy Meink, Secretary of the Air Force.

The statement confirmed weapons exist in orbit while withholding almost every operational detail that would clarify their real capability.

“I would just say that the space environment is critical for military and economic security, and we need to make sure that the US can operate freely there,” Meink added.

The disclosure functioned more as a signal meant to unsettle rivals than as a genuine accounting of what the United States has actually built or deployed.

Space control, in military terms, spans a wide range of tools, including jammers, spoofers, lasers, and kinetic hardware.

Victoria Samson, chief director of space security at the Secure World Foundation, suggested orbital jammers likely match whatever system was referenced.

Kinetic weapons remain a less probable candidate given how much debris such an attack would generate for everyone in orbit.

That debris risk explains why American officials have long favoured non-destructive counterspace tools over ones capable of shattering a satellite outright.

Why Washington chose this moment

Russian and Chinese counterspace activity, much of it tied directly to ongoing conflicts, appears to have driven the timing of this admission.

Russian hackers disabled tens of thousands of modems tied to the Viasat network hours after the conflict in Ukraine started in 2022, crippling communications across parts of Europe.

Reports from February 2026 indicated two Russian satellites had likely intercepted signals from at least a dozen European spacecraft since that conflict began.

China's fleet exceeded 1,060 operational satellites by mid-2025, with hundreds dedicated to intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance work supporting its military planning.

A separate US assessment noted Russia launched a satellite in 2024 positioned near an American reconnaissance spacecraft, widely interpreted as counterspace testing.

With Russia and China, known rivals of the U.S., making strides, it is expected that the US will flex its muscles as a deterrent.

However, experts argue that the announcement does not carry enough weight to serve as warning to its rivals.

“It is too vague to have a meaningful deterrent value,” said Clayton Swope, deputy director of the Aerospace Security Project.

Effective deterrence, Swope argued, usually depends on adversaries understanding how and when a weapon might actually be used against them.

Neither Moscow nor Beijing has issued an immediate public response following the American disclosure.

There is an Android malware out there that comes with an AI assistant that tells it what to do. The assistant seems to be independent of the malware’s operator, allowing the tool to work without requiring the operators to be present in real-time.

The malware in question is called RedHat. It was discovered by security researchers Zimperium zLabs, who believe it is of Chinese origin. It is currently being distributed via third-party app stores, social media, malvertising, and SMS spam, and requires Android’s Accessibility permissions to work.

The malware itself is a typical banking trojan - it creates an invisible overlay every time the victim brings up a banking app, capturing login credentials and one-time passwords, and thus giving attackers direct control over people’s banking accounts.

AI-powered eyes

But what makes RedHat stand out from a sea of Android banking trojans is its AI-powered component. The model serves as a kind of remote “eyes and hands” for controlling the victim’s phone.

Usually, when criminals develop banking trojans, they need to code exact coordinates of the layout for it to work. They need to code where the password is entered, or where the login button is. If the banking app gets redesigned and changes its layout, the malware breaks.

With AI, that is no longer a problem. RedHat gets a picture of what’s on the screen, sends it to the AI assistant, which then instructs the malware on how to proceed.

"RatHat uses AI to intelligently navigate and control the device interface in real-time, making its operations more adaptable and harder for security software to detect than traditional, scripted automation," Zimperium explained.

The tool also has a few advanced persistence mechanisms, being capable of reinstalling deleted components, and intercepting the uninstall process to cancel it while displaying a fake error message to the victim.

So far, there is no word on who the targets are, or how many people might have been compromised.

New data from Seagate has claimed AI is increasing the business importance of stored information while exposing weaknesses in infrastructure readiness.

The company's research found 99% of respondents expect AI workloads to increase their storage requirements in the next three years.

Yet only 38% describe their organizations as completely prepared, while 43% identify storage infrastructure among the leading obstacles to wider AI deployment.

AI is raising the stakes for storage planning

The survey gathered responses from more than 2,700 technology decision-makers and found that 86% reported moderate or significant returns from AI investments.

Among those respondents, 33% said their organizations were already seeing substantial measurable financial or operational benefits from AI initiatives.

Those returns increase the importance of retaining information that can support future models, applications and decisions across changing business requirements.

Nearly 7 in 10 respondents expect storage requirements to increase by at least 26%, including 32% anticipating growth exceeding 50%.

Furthermore, 98% of respondents regard storage as strategic infrastructure rather than simply an administrative technology function.

The survey nevertheless shows that preparedness remains incomplete, with data quality and readiness identified by 53% as another major deployment difficulty.

Storage therefore ranks ahead of compute availability, cited by 27%, and energy constraints, which were identified by 24% of respondents.

The figures indicate that adding computing capacity alone does not resolve the infrastructure limitations organizations encounter when deploying increasingly data-intensive AI systems.

Sustainability is becoming part of the storage equation

Infrastructure expansion is also encountering sustainability concerns, with 77% of respondents reporting delays or changes to planned growth.

Within that figure, 36% said investments had undergone major changes, while another 41% experienced smaller postponements linked to sustainability considerations.

Power consumption was the most frequently considered environmental factor for storage hardware, cited by 62% of respondents.

Equipment lifespan followed at 55%, while respondents broadly connected longer hardware service periods with improved sustainability across data center operations.

Current confidence remains below future expectations, with 39% describing their storage operations as highly sustainable under present conditions, according to survey responses.

That proportion rises to 61% when respondents assess where their organizations expect storage sustainability to stand five years from now.

Funding levels also influence those expectations, with 70% of organizations holding sustainability budgets above $100 million expecting highly sustainable operations within five years.

By comparison, 48% of organizations with annual sustainability budgets below $1 million anticipate reaching that same level during the period.

Training material, active datasets, model checkpoints and retained outputs can impose substantially different infrastructure requirements throughout an AI system’s lifecycle.

For organizations expanding AI operations, those differences make storage architecture, equipment lifespan, energy consumption and capacity planning increasingly interconnected decisions.

The survey does not establish that every organization will face identical costs, although its findings indicate that storage growth is widely anticipated.

AMD's processors and graphics cards could soon get more expensive in the latest blow from the RAM crisis rumor mill.

Wccftech spotted that leaker Harukaze5719 highlighted a post from ChannelGate (the Board Channels over in Asia) that cites sources in the supply chain who claim that TSMC has informed its customers of a 10% price rise.

The post observes that most of AMD's chips are manufactured by TSMC, and that Team Red has in turn notified its customers of a 10% "price adjustment" across its "entire chip product line".

That means everything, so on the consumer front, we can expect AMD's GPUs and Ryzen processors to be hit with price increases — and motherboard chipsets are also affected, so the price of those AMD boards will climb, too.

It's worth noting that processors aren't referred to explicitly in the post on the Board Channels, but given the mention of the entirety of AMD's chips, I think we can take that as real (as the leaker Harukaze5719 indicates).

The sources believe that AMD will enforce this new policy in Q4, so it could happen next month, in theory (although all of this remains a rumor).

In other RAM crisis bleakness, the Steam Frame arrived earlier this week with a much-inflated price tag compared to what Valve first envisioned for the VR headset. It starts at $1,059 / £889 / AU$1,609, which is a few hundred more dollars than what Valve was thinking originally.

As PC Gamer reports, a hardware engineer at Valve, Joy Lyons, said, "We set out to design [the Steam Frame] with one particular price in mind, but we've made choices to make sure that we're making a product that is choiceful, that people can purchase. They can upgrade with different features later. But we wanted to make sure we had a base product with really great performance. Then that price target shifted due to the ongoing RAM crisis around the world."

Analysis: a believable enough prediction

Sadly, the AMD rumor is another worrying doom nugget from what seems to be a never-ending supply of bad news in the past couple of months. Just this week, we've had a report that shows DDR5 RAM is somehow getting even more expensive, blowing past the levels I'd expected — not to mention the laptop price hikes.

The RAM crisis was forecast to worsen as 2026 rolled on, and that appears to be unfolding just as predicted — and there's very possibly worse to come in 2027, going by rumors elsewhere. If the pundits, analysts and insiders were right about this year, there's a fair chance they'll be right about next year, too.

Okay, so that's not a foregone conclusion, and some kind of more positive developments could yet happen — we can hope. This particular rumor must also be treated with some caution, as a Board Channels post may not have everything right (by any means), but the problem is that given the current climate, it's believable enough that AMD has price hikes in the works. Team Red already warned us earlier this year about pricing pain for the second half of 2026, after all.

• ESET reports Salt Typhoon shifted focus to Latin America, hitting Argentina, Peru, Venezuela, and others

Salt Typhoon has been reassigned to Latin America, and it’s apparently all due to Donald Trump’s renewed “interest” in the continent.

Cybersecurity researchers ESET have been tracking Salt Typhoon, a Chinese state-sponsored threat actor for years. This is the same group that was seen hacking telecommunication giants and government agencies across the western world since at least 2019.

According to the researchers, from mid-2025 and well into 2026, the group has been targeting a number of Latin American countries: Argentina, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela. They were seen deploying brand new malware, a backdoor called SparroWocky, that features around 30 commands such as system profiling, file exfiltration, screenshot grabbing, and more. ESET says that around 90% of all Salt Typhoon’s recent activity was devoted to this specific region.

A rare occurrence

The discovery of China-built malware in these countries comes as somewhat of a surprise. Latin America cannot be considered an open ally to the Chinese, but they are quite influential in the region, both economically, and diplomatically. ESET sees the development as a “rare occurrence”, and stresses that this is most likely a response to Trump’s initiatives in the region.

“Donald Trump’s second presidential term has brought about an aggressive reaffirmation of US interests in Latin America, which threatens various long-term investments that China has cultivated throughout the continent in the last decade, in domains such as energy, mining, and telecommunications,” ESET says. “We suspect that FamousSparrow’s (their name for Salt Typhoon) activities are intended to help China better monitor and anticipate the reaction of local governments to current US pressures.”

ESET says the backdoor is being delivered via a trident loader scheme that consists of a legitimate executable, a malicious DLL, and a file containing the encrypted malware. By side-loading the DLL, the crooks can deploy the malware without being spotted.

• Nats report reveals a software defect caused days of flight disruption
• The defect occurred in the 'space of a millisecond'

The UK airspace came to a grinding halt earlier this month after the UK’s National Air Traffic Services (Nats) announced that there was a glitch in its flight processing system.

Following an investigation, NATS has determined that the fault was caused by a manual request for a squawk code that became corrupted, forcing the National Airspace System (NAS) that covers the UK to be restarted, grounding and diverting thousands of aircraft.

The disruption began in the morning of 8 September, and while the initial glitch was fixed within six hours, the subsequent disruption across the UK lasted over two days leaving hundreds of thousands of passengers stranded.

Squawk code corrupted in the ‘space of a millisecond’

Squawk codes are used to track and identify aircraft during flight plans, allowing air traffic controllers to monitor altitude, speed, direction, and flight progress.

The glitch occurred when a flight manually requested a squawk code, with the report noting that there was “nothing abnormal or invalid” about the request. During the processing of this request, a second “higher priority activity” came through to NAS, temporarily pausing the processing of the manually requested squawk.

When the process resumed the generated squawk was corrupted, causing some subsequent flight data to suffer the same fate. All of this occurred within the “space of a millisecond”, the report states.

With flight data now inaccurate for some flights, safety had to be prioritized due to the limited information available at the time. Only flights within the London Area Control Centre were affected by the software defect, but in order to safely restart the NAS, flight restrictions were put in place for around six hours across the UK.

But the report also notes that the severity of the issue was only discovered two and a half hours

Due to the number of cancelled and delayed flights, disruption continued for two days as stranded passengers waited to catch rescheduled flights.

All in all, 2,163 flights were affected by the restrictions and 300,000 passengers were impacted across airports of all sizes, including major international transport hubs such as Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Manchester.

Scrutiny and criticism directed at Nats

The UK government, which owns just under half of Nats, has placed additional pressure on the service, with Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander labelling the disruption as “completely unacceptable”.

“I have now received Nats' report and, while I am pleased to see that the safety of passengers was protected, it’s clear we need to urgently understand why this issue was not discovered and fixed before it caused chaos,” the transport secretary said. “I have therefore tasked the CAA with conducting an independent review to check Nats’ findings and investigate their investment plans to enhance resilience in the future, along with regulatory accountability.

“It is crucial that our national infrastructure is fit for the future, and this government will make sure the aviation sector is as resilient as possible, so passengers can get to where they need to be.”

“I would like to apologise again, very sincerely, to everyone who was affected last week,” Martin Rolfe, Chief Executive of NATS, said in a statement. “It's our job to get people where they want to go, quickly and without delay and we are devastated when that goes wrong. However, our primary role is to keep our skies safe, and everyone who flies through them. At no point last week was safety in question.”

Affected passengers have also raised questions about the level of support they received. Due to the extraordinary circumstances involved in the disruption, almost all of those affected will not receive compensation. According to the Civil Aviation Authority, passengers had the option of choosing between a rescheduled flight or a refund, and were entitled to care and assistance from airlines including food, drink, accommodation, and transfers.

Last month, two tankers heading for the United States were hit by a cyberattack, forcing the FBI and Coast Guard to board at least one of the vessels and investigate.

The first vessel is called VL Prosperity, which was allegedly transporting 2.3 million barrels of oil. It is a Liberian crude oil tanker, travelling from Egypt’s Sidi Kerir Oil Terminal towards Galveston, Texas, where it was supposed to dock on August 24. On its route, lasting roughly 25 days, it passed through the Strait of Gibraltar.

Some three days before arriving, it requested assistance from law enforcement, prompting a “highly specialized team” of FBI and Coast Guard cyber experts to board. The ship is currently sitting in the Gulf of Mexico.

Iranians (indirectly) claiming responsibility

“On August 21, a highly specialized team – comprised of USCG Law Enforcement personnel, USCG Cyber Protection Team members, a vessel inspector, and FBI Cyber Action Team operators – embarked the vessel to conduct a comprehensive cyber security boarding and investigation,” a US Coast Guard spokesperson told Cybernews.

The spokesperson also said the team’s activity is “designed to ensure the integrity of the vessel’s operational and information technology systems." The Coast Guard apparently saw “indications that the vessel’s network were compromised by foreign cyber actors.” It later described the incident as “malicious cyber activity.”

The second vessel in question is called Kohaku, flying under the flag of the Marshall Islands. It was travelling towards Texas to load liquefied petroleum gas, as per Wall Street Journal, and has been sitting near Malta for the past couple of days. At press time (Friday morning), it was travelling through the East Mediterranean Sea.

So far, no threat actors have publicly claimed responsibility for these attacks. However, the Iranian Mehr News Agency allegedly hinted the attack was a “message from Iran’s “Resistance Front” to Washington and the broader Middle East.”

The same publication - also the first one to report on the incident and name VL Prosperity as one of the victims - said the attackers infiltrated engine-room systems, reduced the engine’s cooling flow, increased the engine speed, and disabled the ship’s fuel and engine-oil tank, all citing an unnamed crew member. Apparently, the ship’s communications were knocked offline for a day and a half, as well.

In the midst of hype for Apple’s new A20 Pro chipset and slick foldable software, the company’s durability department is quietly having a moment.

Its Ceramic Shield 2 display glass — first introduced on the iPhone 17 line and returning this year on the iPhone 18 Pro — is earning plaudits for delivering on the promise of 3x better scratch resistance 12 months on from its release, while the iPhone Duo is set to arrive next month with a host of impressive on-paper durability credentials (including, notably, a Galaxy Z Fold 8-beating IP68 resistance rating).

But while features like ingress protection and corrosion resistance aren’t the sexiest topics of discussion at Apple Park, they are some of the most important for ensuring Apple’s products stand the test of time — and Tom Marieb, the company’s new Vice President of Hardware Engineering (a role formerly occupied by CEO John Ternus), knows that better than most.

I had the chance to quiz Marieb on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo in a group interview at Apple’s London HQ, and he lifted the lid on how Ceramic Shield 2 — which we described as “the first iPhone glass we fully trust” earlier this year — managed to deliver such a noticeable jump in quality versus the original Ceramic Shield, and why he’s “especially proud” of the iPhone Duo’s hinge durability.

“Personally, when I see someone put a screen protector on their iPhone, it makes my skin crawl, because we work so hard to make beautiful front screens,” Marieb told me. “So we very much wanted to develop new coatings that could withstand [scratches], but also make sure that these coatings were wear-resistant as well. We worry about scratching, which is obviously very dependent on having [material that can withstand] very sharp things going into the screen. But we also worry about wear over time; as people use the screen, whether they’ll wear away that surface. And it turns out that those things are a little counterindicated in a lot of materials.

“So we had to try to optimize both of those [qualities] simultaneously [...] And I think we finally hit on a nice balance between the two [in Ceramic Shield 2]. We could have made it more scratch-resistant, but it would have been a little less wear-resistant. It’s the long life we’re looking for against both of those loads over time.”

Marieb added that, in testing Ceramic Shield 2, Apple accounted for half a decade’s worth of use in a comparatively minuscule testing period: “We very much try to meet the customer where they live, and so we don't design tests that measure old military specs or old standards; we try to say, ‘How are customers actually using this? What exactly are they exposing it to in the real world?’ And we make tests that mimic those things.

“And as you said, people waiting a year or two to actually see the benefits of [Ceramic Shield 2] means we've correctly predicted how people would use it. We accelerate time to try to compress those things into the engineering cycle, so that we can feed back as we try one thing after another, and can represent five years of life — or even more — within a couple of weeks of testing.”

It all hinges on the hinge

The display is the most important part of any iPhone, but the foldable iPhone Duo saw Apple tasked with protecting a new, equally crucial component: the hinge.

Like any foldable, the Duo can be used open or closed, and Apple has also developed dedicated ‘Seated’ or ‘Standing’ modes that will see the Duo bent at various angles for extended periods. The former displays visual content on the top half of the screen and viewing controls on the bottom (picture a Game Boy Advance), while the latter turns the Duo into a bedside clock, photo gallery, or weather screen via StandBy.

Whichever orientation you choose, the Duo remains fixed in place — but the work to make that happen wasn’t easy.

“I'm glad you hit on this, because this is something I'm especially proud of, and it took us a long time [to crack],” Marieb explained. “What we worry about with this device is that people see how thin it is and they think it's fragile. People seem to be worried about the Air, too, but it's honestly one of the most reliable phones we’ve ever made. And so we thought, ‘How do we design a hinge that feels very solid when you close it, but also really solid when you open it?’

“We really worked on the torque profile very heavily, and that means changing a lot of the mechanical properties of the hinge to have it feel solid, like a high-end automobile's car door, when you shut it. That was design intent, so people would have a feeling like, ‘Oh, it's okay. This is well crafted, and it's safe for me to use and not worry about it.’

And then, as you said, we have a lot of use cases where the Duo is [in a half-folded state]. And so we also had to think, ‘Can people interact with this [device] and not have it feel floppy?’ So getting those torque profiles right at both those ends, as well as in the middle — not having it feel like you're pulling something open, and not feeling as if it's floppy — we spent a lot of time optimizing that. So thank you for noticing, because a lot of blood, sweat, and tears went into that.”

The dual benefits of nano texture

On top (literally) of the iPhone Duo’s hinge, Apple has equipped its first foldable phone with a 7.6‑inch nano‑texture display. This new material isn’t a million miles away from the anti-reflective nano-texture glass that can be added to the best MacBooks, though, of course, the Duo version of said glass needs to bend in half.

Another journalist in my group interview with Marieb noted that foldable creases typically appear minimal out of the box, but become more prominent mere months after being used extensively. In response, the Apple executive was bullish on the longevity of the Duo’s hinge and explained that the nano‑texture display should help maintain its obscurity:

“Hold us accountable to that, please […] The choice of a matte finish — apart from it being beautiful — is part of that equation. When you look at glossy displays, their specularity makes it very easy to pick up topology differences. That’s part of the reason we picked the matte finish — it’s not only beautiful in terms of preventing glare, but it’s also more forgiving of [topology] changes over time.”

Apple, then, is supremely confident in the durability credentials of its first foldable phone — and we look forward to putting the iPhone Duo through its paces ahead of its official launch on October 23. Legendary speaker maker Wharfedale has created four new boom boxes in the form of the new Nova subwoofers. Ranging in size from an apartment-friendly 8-inches to an enormous 15 inches, all four models feature newly developed drivers, passive radiators and refined cabinet architecture.

These aren't thuggish bass monsters; they're designed for the more discerning listener who wants to hear as well as feel the low end. Wharfedale says that "rather than chasing chest-thumping, window-rattling exaggeration, the Nova Series is built around balance, texture and precision."

There are four subwoofers in the range: the Nova 8, the Nova 10, the Nova 12 and the Nova 15. The Nova 8 is designed for smaller setups and stereo installations, with the Nova 10 upping the power for medium-sized rooms. The Nova 12 is for more immersive home theater setups, and the flagship Nova 15 is made for larger spaces and the most demanding setups.

All four models feature Wharfedale's newly engineered long-throw driver, which is made from rigid but lightweight speaker cones that have been treated with a proprietary coating to make them stiffer and better at self-damping without also increasing their mass.

Those cones are teamed with a heavy duty die-cast chassis, an oversized high-roll surround, and a high-excursion motor system to deliver high output while maintaining stability. A large diameter voice coil and aluminum shorting ring minimize distortion and improve transient response, according to Wharfedale.

The second key feature here is the Auxiliary Bass Radiator, which is downward firing with a dual suspension design. It's made to work alongside the new driver by extending low-frequency output without the need for a conventional reflex port.

Wharfedale says that enables it to avoid issues such as unwanted resonance, turbulence, chuffing and compression, and each Nova is optimized according to its cabinet volume, driver size, amplifier configuration and intended operating range. The goal, Wharfedale says, is the speed of a sealed enclosure with the scale of a larger reflex design.

Depending on which model you choose, you get between 200W and 360W of built-in Class D amplification with up to 80V peak output and "substantial" dynamic headroom.

The amplifier, driver, cabinet loading and DSP have been designed as an integrated system rather than separately in order to maximize power and precision. And there is an adjustable crossover, phase alignment and level calibration to fine-tune the sound to suit your space.

One of the interesting features here is the way the DSP adjusts the dynamic EQ. When you're listening at lower volumes it focuses on perceived weight and range, but at higher levels it manages the driver's excursion to keep the audio clean without overdriving, enabling the Nova to punch above its size.

All four models will be available in late September 2026 and the prices are:

"Feel the vibe here, that's what I love," said Harry Sung as he stood in the middle of a buzzing Apple Fifth Ave flagship store. Moments earlier, Sung picked up the first burgundy iPhone 18 Pro Max of the day after being ushered into the glass edifice by none other than new Apple CEO John Ternus.

It was a big day for Sung, who scored his second year in a row as the first Apple customer on iPhone launch day, and an even bigger day for Ternus, who was hosting his first iPhone launch store event as CEO.

It's been a whirlwind few weeks for Ternus, who officially took over for former CEO Tim Cook (new Executive Chairman) on September 1 and, a week later, was on stage unveiling the iPhone 18 Pro line, new AirPods, new Apple Watches, and the exciting foldable iPhone Duo.

On this day, that flexi-phone was nowhere in sight. Even so, the atmosphere was electric, and it felt, to those of us who've been attending iPhone store launch events for almost 20 years, like the old days.

When I caught up with Ternus inside the store, he told me the day was "exciting," and I could tell he was still a little amped up from the store opening ceremony.

At precisely 8am ET, Ternus appeared behind the frosted glass doors of Apple's Fifth Avenue flagship store and then swung open the doors. He stood for a time, waving to a cheering crowd, behind which was a small cluster of protesters shouting about, among other things, iPhone manufacturing working conditions. As the groundswell of excitement grew around Ternus, the protesters seemed to lose steam.

Ternus then turned to the long line of iPhone customers waiting outside the store, many of whom had pre-ordered the phone last week, and started greeting them. First up was Sung.

In his arm was a binder full of cards denoting the 120 Apple Stores he'd visited around the world. Sung later told me he had met Ternus once before at another product launch at Apple's "100th store" where he'd had Ternus sign the book. The inside cover also featured more than half a dozen other Apple executives' signatures (This is not surprising. In another part of the store, I witnessed Apple head of Retail Deirdre O'Brien signing someone's MacBook.)

Ternus posed with Sung outside the store and then turned his attention to the next customer.

After collecting his iPhone 18 Pro Max, Sung briefly appeared outside the store again and held his purchase aloft. The crowd cheered again.

Later, when I asked Sung, 21, how he secured his pole position, he told me that first he pre-ordered his burgundy 256GB iPhone 18 Pro Max online (he never leases and always buys), and then he arrived at the store yesterday at 8:30pm ET — and waited.

I asked Sung, who is a native of China but is currently living in New Jersey and attending university, if he's ever owned an Android. He shook his head and then told me his first iPhone was the iPhone 15.

Why, though, does Sung visit all these stores, and why was he here right now? Sung looked at me like I had lobsters dancing on my head. "I love Apple," he told me, as if nothing could be more obvious.

When the United States decided to oust and capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in a daring nighttime operation, the capital of Caracas was turned to complete darkness as the United States Cyber Command allegedly knocked power generation offline.

But this goes beyond giving US troops favorable conditions to infiltrate Maduro's compound. Since coming to power in 2013, Maduro had been building a huge surveillance network to help keep an eye on and - if necessary - quell opposition. A surveillance network that could capture the whole operation on tape.

But as a President at odds with the US, Maduro sourced much of the surveillance tech from China with future plans to integrate banned Chinese AI systems into the network. While Venezuela may have changed allegiances, a new report from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) has warned that the implementation of Chinese AI could still go ahead.

Venezuela looks to integrate Chinese AI into surveillance infrastructure

ASPI’s latest report, titled ‘Warning signals: Venezuela and the risk of Chinese AI-enabled digital authoritarianism’ [PDF], warns that before the ousting of Maduro, then Vice-President Delcy Rodríguez sought to sign “an agreement to adopt Chinese-built AI systems … to use Chinese AI to enhance existing state-sponsored surveillance.”

Following the operation to remove Maduro, Rodríguez was installed as the Venezuelan President just two days after. But since then ASPI warns that there has been nothing to signal a change in direction from Rodríguez’s plans, meaning that the US could be heading a nation filled with Chinese AI-assisted surveillance tech.

“Venezuela will become one of the first countries outside China to import China’s new generation of LLM-based AI systems for surveillance and control, and the most advanced adopter in the Western Hemisphere,” the report states.

In the immediate aftermath of the likely fixed 2024 Venezuelan presidential elections, protesters and dissidents were identified online and subsequently monitored using video and drone surveillance. Numerous protest leaders disappeared, likely captured by the authorities for their activities.

Plans to adopt Chinese AI technologies as part of Venezuela’s surveillance network would likely enable the state to continue repressing opposition. “Chinese or other AI tools could strengthen a domestically directed apparatus already used to manage dissent, restrict information and preserve political power,” the report says.

One of the companies looking to provide its technology for use in Venezuela is iFlytek. The US held iFlytek as a responsible party during China’s attempts to round up and detain the Uyghur Muslim in the Xinjiang region, and banned the sale of the company’s products in the US in 2019.

Moving Venezuela away from China

The ASPI report calls upon US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to spearhead efforts to dismantle the surveillance network and prevent the import of Chinese AI systems into Venezuela’s apparatus.

“China’s leaders appear to understand that assets and investments of its national champions are at risk in Venezuela. Beijing’s approach seems to be, in part, strengthening oversight of state-owned assets abroad to assist in risk protection and management,” the report states.

The report states that dismantling Venezuela’s surveillance infrastructure would align efforts to combat Chinese surveillance tech, and encourage others to dismantle mass-surveillance systems. The dismantling of Venezuela’s surveillance infrastructure would also help position the US’s image as a liberator, rather than just a new face of an old regime.

But the slight irony therein is juxtaposed with the US’s own current surveillance woes, especially in the wake of opposition to Flock camera systems, and AI companies refusing to provide government access to their models for domestic surveillance purposes.

September has been an absolutely mega month for games, and we're barely past the halfway mark!

You no longer need knowledge of advanced coding languages to build apps. AI has torn down the barriers to coding, making it as simple as describing what you want in plain English.

Or at least, it can appear that way.

But coding isn't just about writing syntax. It's about systems architecture, understanding how people will really use a platform, and ensuring the right measures are in place to limit vulnerabilities.

I spoke with Gabriela Moreira, CEO of Quint, about how people using AI tools to write code can better understand the associated risks and put in place early checks and processes to limit unmaintainable code and catastrophic bugs.

Can AI be trusted to write production-ready code without human oversight? If not, what makes AI-generated bugs distinct from human error?

Oversight is definitely needed, because AI exists to serve humans, and therefore humans need to tell AI what to do and evaluate its results.

Now, which type of evaluation is the most adequate? You can read its code line by line or ship to production and monitor for problems, to talk about two extremes. Both of these are already techniques used to oversee code that might contain human error.

The main differences that AI brings to the table are the amount of potentially wrong code that gets produced and the cognitive disconnection of any human to the elements of what gets produced. Code review and monitoring are both harder at this load scale and cognitive disconnection.

Which core business systems are most vulnerable to AI coding flaws?

The ones that are harder to test, like concurrent and distributed systems, or any system with a high level of non-determinism where there are too many paths to consider.

AI is a generation tool, which is only as good as our ability to decide if a generated solution is correct or not. If I have good tests, or some other kind of verification harness I trust, I can accept AI solutions with less risk. If a system is hard to test or verify, there might be too many blind spots where flaws can sneak in.

What are the hidden operational and security risks of deploying AI-generated code without formal verification?

Perhaps the best way to think about risk in 2026 is by considering the asymmetry: defenders must protect all parts of their code, while attackers may only find one vulnerability to cause huge damage.

AI companies are already taking this asymmetry into account when they decided to give a model like Mythos only to companies in a program to secure themselves, before they land in the hands of potential attackers.

Formal verification is probably the strongest tool we know that can fight this asymmetry, but there are still many challenges in the area that make it infeasible to verify all the code surface, and vulnerabilities can still be found in unverified components. There’s no magical solution, and combining different strategies is the wisest thing to do.

Why is catching a design-level bug early in the process so important?

The answer to this question before AI wrote the code was quite different: because rewriting code is very expensive and error-prone if you catch the bug after months of development instead. I don’t think this is a strong argument anymore.

So, the new answer is: you are way more likely to find this problem in the scope of a design you can still reason about than after AI writes thousands of lines of code with the bug hiding in one of them.

You could maybe notice the problem as you typed the code, thinking “wait, we didn’t consider this scenario!” But this is less likely to happen if AI wrote the code for you, so more careful design is important.

Developers are used to reasoning about possibilities and bugs while compiling and executing different versions of code, so I’m extremely concerned about the design process involving mostly markdown files that cannot be compiled or executed, or interacted with in any way other than reading.

What simple checks, tools, and safety nets can dev teams put in place to verify AI code before it hits production?

First of all, tests! But tests that actually help with trust, not just any AI-generated test that makes some arbitrary assertions and has to be updated all the time.

I like to think about tests in terms of which behaviors they are exercising and which kinds of regressions they are preventing. If controlling the quality of tests becomes a challenge, formal models can help by either being a generator of scenarios to test or by validating that existing tests enforce interesting behavior.

Additionally, mutation testing is very helpful in measuring the quality of tests by how many different regressions they could catch.

What level of human oversight do you recommend to balance development speed with code quality and reliability?

This depends so much on context and risks. The best I can recommend is to do whatever allows you to ship with enough confidence and to feel enabled to make software changes without fear of breaking what is already working.

The worst scenario is always to get hacked or leak other people’s data. The second worst is to get to a state where there are a lot of things wrong with the software, but whatever you try to fix results in breaking things even more, so it gets stuck in a bad state.

I think it’s quite easy for AI-generated code to end up in this state. Interestingly, I think the way to escape it is very similar to how we handled legacy code that became too hard to maintain: first add enough tests to be confident your oversight is enough, and then change it.

An opening act that was chock-full of shocks – we're looking at you Jets and Giants and, for very different reasons, Rams, Chargers and Packers – has given NFL Week 2 a completely different feel.

It's probably why the slate is so wonky, with many of the best games set to play out simultaneously during Sunday's early-afternoon window. You've got some tough choices to make (unless you give up entirely and go with RedZone), but whichever game you go with, the outlook looks promising.

Bengals vs Texans

• Sunday, 1pm ET, CBS/Paramount+ (US) | FREE on 5 (UK)

We stand to learn a lot from the Bengals' early-window clash with the Texans – specifically if Cincinnati's defense has gone from bad-to-good, and if Houston's has somehow gone the other way. The Texans ranked No.1 in the NFL for yards allowed last season and the Bengals No.31 (of 32), but you wouldn't have guessedit from their opening-day showings.

Packers vs Jets

• Sunday, 1pm ET, Fox/Fox One (US)

It took the Jets eight weeks to claim their first win last year. This time, they've done it straight out of the gate. No.2 pick David Bailey registered a sack on debut as New York embarrassed the Titans, while the Packers were all kinds of awful in a blowout by the Vikings, squandering a 12-point lead as just 21 of Jordan Love's 42 passes found their target. Green Bay have now lost six straight games – but this would take the biscuit.

Vikings vs Bears

• Sunday, 1pm ET, Fox/Fox One (US) | FREE on 7Plus (AU) & TVNZ+ (NZ)

Bears coach Ben Johnson raised eyebrows in preseason by stating his aim to break the NFL scoring record, and Chicago duly kicked off with a monster 59-point showing. The Brian Flores-run Vikings defense will provide a sterner test. However, while Minnesota's defense ranked at No.2 against the pass last season, it struggled to stop the run – and Williams, D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai combined for 291 yards and six touchdowns on the ground last week.

Raiders vs Chargers

• Sunday, 4.05pm ET, CBS/Paramount+ (US)

Chargers fans definitely won't want to miss this one, because they might not get a sniff of victory again until late November. The Bolts' schedule from Week 3 to Week 10 is horrendous, but on the bright side there's no possible way they could lose either of their first two fixtures... The Cardinals, who are projected to be at the very bottom of the pile come the end of the season, wiped the floor with them last weekend, and Justin Herbert was utterly lost in Mike McDaniel's new-look offense.

Giants vs Rams

• Monday, 8.15pm ET, ABC/ESPN/ESPN2/ESPN Unlimited (US)

The Rams were so bad in their opener they've gone from Super Bowl favorites to a potential bust in record time. The one saving grace from their atrocious showing in Melbourne is that they only flew out a day before the game, but with three tough fixtures set to follow this MNF meeting with the Giants, Sean McVay's men need to get a W on the board. Unfortunately for them, Big Blue look transformed under new coach John Harbaugh.

There’s something cooking in the Spotify kitchen, and the music-streaming service is teasing some sort of involvement with GTA 6 and Rockstar Games — but it’s keeping its card very close to its chest.

Earlier this week, Spotify billboards started appearing across major US cities including New York, LA, and Miami featuring GTA 6 artwork and the Spotify logo (see below). The billboards follow Rockstar’s recent announcement of Grand Theft Auto 6: The Album, a limited-edition vinyl that has already sold out.

What this could mean still remains unclear, and Spotify has yet to tell us what it and Rockstar have in store — but there’s a handful of theories floating around.

Firstly, some users on Reddit believe the billboards are just an extension of Rockstar’s marketing push for the GTA 6 soundtrack.

Before the tracklist was unveiled, artists including Travis Scott, Pinkpantheress, Future, Morgan Wallen, and more teased their musical contributions by sharing GTA 6 artwork to social media, so some think Spotify’s cryptic billboards are simply a sign that the original songs will soon be able to stream on the platform.

The billboards have also fueled speculation that curated Spotify playlists based on GTA 6 radio stations are part of the soundtrack rollout, which seems like a natural way for Spotify to contribute to the launch of the game. But others are convinced the streamer’s involvement is much more than this.

For years, players have requested direct Spotify integration with GTA, which would allow users to link their accounts and stream their own playlists in-game instead of the radio stations. On paper it sounds like a desirable option, however there’s a lot of skepticism surrounding this.

GTA has gained notoriety for its curated radio stations. If anything, they’ve emerged as somewhat of a pop culture phenomenon outside the world of gaming — as one Redditor puts it, ‘the radio stations make the game’.

Not only this, but given the time, creativity, and money that Rockstar puts into developing GTA’s radio stations (because getting artists on board costs), I can see how music streaming integration could be placed on the back burner for now.

That said, I wouldn’t totally rule out the possibility of Spotify integration coming to future GTA gameplays. For now, however, the billboards remain ambiguous, so it’s pretty much a waiting game.

A few days ago, I wrote about how upgrading to iOS 27 doesn’t automatically give you the new Siri AI. To get Apple’s upgraded assistant, you have to jump through an additional hoop: go into Settings, find Siri and apply to join the waitlist for the Siri AI beta.

The good news is that I didn’t have to wait long. Yesterday, my application was approved and Siri AI quietly installed itself on my iPhone.

It feels like years since Apple first talked about giving Siri a much-needed intelligence upgrade, and I almost can’t believe it’s finally here. Well, almost here — it remains a beta — but the important thing is that it does what it says on the tin.

Before Siri AI, “Would you like me to use ChatGPT to answer that?” had become Siri’s standard response to almost anything interesting I asked it to do beyond setting a timer. Now Siri can produce proper answers of its own.

You can still activate Siri AI in the familiar way by saying “Hey Siri,” but there’s also a new Siri app on the Home Screen. Inside the app, you can either type to Siri or talk using your voice, much as you can with ChatGPT.

Things look different, too. A new floating globe animation appears when Siri AI is listening. There are so many things it should now be capable of that I almost didn’t know where to start.

So I kept it simple. I picked five things I regularly use ChatGPT Voice for and tested whether Siri AI could now handle them.

This isn’t a comparison of everything ChatGPT can do. Outside Voice mode, ChatGPT is capable of far more. I wanted to compare the two assistants as I would actually use them on my iPhone: by talking to them.

Siri AI is still technically in beta, but Apple has decided it’s ready enough for people to use, so I’m going to test it.

Test 1: Can it actually have a conversation?

The first test involved finding information and, more importantly, explaining it clearly. I asked Siri AI about something I’d written about a few days earlier: AI voice-cloning scams.

“Why are people worried about AI voice-cloning scams, and what should I actually do to protect myself?” I asked.

In response, Siri AI produced a massive slab of text about voice scams, displayed it on screen and read it aloud in a slightly stilted voice. The information was accurate and factual, but the response was long and boring, and Siri’s voice had no real personality.

I interrupted it with my next question: “What is the single most important thing I should actually do?” To its credit, it stopped and answered the new question.

ChatGPT Voice, by comparison, talked to me like a human who was interested in the subject. It sounded conversational rather than as though it was reading from a block of text. It didn’t waffle and gave me the information I needed neatly and succinctly.

Verdict: Siri AI can now deliver useful information on its own, but it still doesn’t feel like a proper conversation, and its voice needs work before it sounds natural.

Test 2: Does Siri know what’s happening in my life?

For the second test, I asked Siri to retrieve something I vaguely remembered from my Gmail inbox, which I access through Apple’s Mail app, rather than giving it precise keywords.

“Find the email with my tickets for Hubris in October and tell me what date it’s on.”

Siri AI checked Mail but initially couldn’t find anything, so I followed up with: “They’re at the Griffin.” Sure enough, it then found the tickets in my inbox and gave me the information I needed.

Next, I asked: “What do I need to bring?”

Siri AI told me I would need to have my tickets downloaded to my phone or printed out. Once again, its answer was functional and cold — and focused entirely on the tickets. There was no consideration of anything else I might need for a concert.

I fired up ChatGPT Voice to compare the answers, and this is where Siri AI had a major advantage. While text-based ChatGPT can connect to my Gmail and search my inbox, ChatGPT Voice can’t currently do that. It therefore failed to retrieve the information I wanted, although it performed a web search and found the date of the concert.

ChatGPT shone when I asked, “What do I need to bring?” Its answer was like night and day compared with Siri’s because it offered genuinely useful advice:

“For a night like that, comfy clothes plus good shoes are key. Maybe a light jacket. Bring the ticket on your phone with a backup screenshot. Photo ID, card for the bar and maybe earplugs. And if you’re meeting anyone, set a rough time and place outside, just in case.”

Verdict: Siri AI beat ChatGPT Voice at the practical part of the test because it could search the Gmail account connected to Apple Mail. However, ChatGPT was much better at understanding the wider context and anticipating what I might actually need for the concert.

Score: 3/5

Test 3: Can Siri see what I’m seeing?

Siri AI is supposed to be able to “see” what’s on your screen and answer questions about it. This is potentially one of its most useful new features, so I gave it a thorough test.

I opened a range of things on my screen—a document, an email, a graph, a photo and a webpage—and asked: “What’s the important thing I need to know here?” Each time, Siri AI successfully picked out the relevant information.

While browsing Crunchyroll, the popular anime streaming service, it gave me a decent explanation of each anime featured on the screen. Siri talks to you while simultaneously displaying its answer over whatever you’re viewing. For example, this is how it looked when describing the anime Black Torch, which happened to be featured on screen:

When I opened an Amazon product page for an unavailable item, Siri AI correctly identified that the most important detail was that it was out of stock. When I viewed an invoice from my accountant, it correctly identified the amount and the payment deadline.

Siri AI could also see through the camera and identify objects very well. Being able to invoke it with “Hey Siri”—or simply move the slider from Photo to Siri while the Camera app is open—is genuinely convenient. It involves much less messing around than entering Live mode in Gemini or opening the camera through ChatGPT Voice.

Verdict: I’ve got to say, Siri AI smashed this test. I’m going to use this feature all the time.

Test 4: Can it think with you?

Next, I gave Siri an open-ended problem that I would normally bring to ChatGPT:

“I’ve got 30 minutes tonight, don’t want to go to the gym, but want some exercise that’ll actually raise my heart rate. What should I do?”

I then changed the rules:

“Actually, I’ve only got 15 minutes and I don’t want to leave the house.”

This is the kind of test that reveals whether Siri has become useful for open-ended judgment rather than simply following commands.

Siri recommended a 30-minute high-intensity interval training workout. It presented me with a simple plan and then asked whether I would like to start a timer so I could begin. When I said I had only 15 minutes, it adapted the workout accordingly. Not bad.

ChatGPT Voice took a different approach. It didn’t give me a workout plan in advance; instead, it immediately launched into a session that it wanted me to follow along with.

That was quick and direct, but I preferred Siri AI’s approach of showing me the workout before asking me to begin. Siri can combine text and voice in a way that ChatGPT currently doesn’t in Voice mode, and that worked particularly well here.

Verdict: Siri AI and ChatGPT Voice approached the task differently, but I preferred Siri’s ability to present the plan visually before helping me get started.

Score: 4/5

Test 5: Can it actually do something ChatGPT can’t?

One home-field advantage Siri AI should have is the ability to perform multistage tasks involving real iPhone apps, so I asked it:

“Find the details of the next concert I have tickets for, add it to my calendar and remind me the evening before.”

Siri AI worked like a dream:

“The next concert you have tickets for is The HU on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at 19:00. I’ve added this to your calendar and set a reminder for the evening before.”

The HU are a Mongolian folk-metal band — so no, Siri hadn’t misheard The Who — and that was a perfect execution of the task.

ChatGPT Voice couldn’t search my Gmail, so it had to rely on previous conversations and web searches. It got close, but it needed more details from me to complete the request. It also told me: “I can’t add it to your iPhone calendar from here.”

Verdict: Siri AI’s system-level integration allowed it to behave like a true virtual assistant, completing a useful multistage task that ChatGPT Voice simply couldn’t perform.

Will I keep using Siri AI?

What became clear during these tests is that Siri AI’s greatest strength is its position inside the iPhone.

It can see what I’m doing, access information held inside my apps and turn a spoken request into an action without making me copy details between different services. That gives Siri an immediate advantage over ChatGPT Voice on iOS.

Siri AI still has a long way to go before it sounds as natural as ChatGPT Voice. ChatGPT remains the assistant I would choose when I want to explore an idea, work through a problem or simply have a convincing conversation. Outside Voice mode, ChatGPT is also much more capable and can even complete bookings or code apps to solve problems.

But when I want something done on my iPhone, Siri is suddenly the more useful option.

Apple has done enough to make me start using Siri again, and after years of disappointment, that might be the most surprising result of all.

Alien: Isolation 2's exterior setting will increase both tension and danger, according to Creative Assembly, because as the player adapts to the new environment, so will the Xenomorph.

Unlike the first game, where players were isolated in a space station and actively hunted by the Xenomorph, the sequel will have an expanded setting, spanning an outdoor colony world and the confines of the Weyland-Yutani outpost.

Players will once again be caught up in a cat-and-mouse experience as they navigate their new environment, but the alien's intelligence will raise the stakes.

"I think the contrast between claustrophobia and pressure versus vulnerability and exposedness, it will make the player have to think on their feet," said principal UI artist Laura Mouther.

The game's weather system will also affect how players approach the outdoors, since storms will impact the sound of the approaching alien, and players will need to "improvise."

"The alien is the perfect hunter," Mouther added. "It will adapt to those situations, to those environments. And you will have to adapt to our environment."

She added that it will feel like a "new experience," but the game will give players the time to understand the mechanics of the game and the world, even if they didn't play the first game.

"It's not unfair," Mouther said. "This alien is also not cheating. If it can't see you, it can't see you, right? If it can't hear you, it can't hear you. We will give players enough time to get to grips with it. But it is an intense experience and a tough game, and that is what the community loved about [the first game]. And we will stick through to that."

Alien: Isolation 2 is now in development and will launch on PS5, Xbox Series X and Series S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.

With energy consumption now one of the most hotly debated topics surrounding new data center development, new rules could be set to come into play to force developers to pay for grid upgrades without pushing the impact onto local citizens.

The Ratepayer Protection Act, which passed on September 16 with 417 votes (and just three against it) would apply to medium and large campuses with peak demands of 100MW+.

Impacted developments could end up having to foot the bill for new electricity generation capacity as well as the transmission and distribution infrastructure that goes along with it.

US data centers could soon be required to pay for grid upgrades

We also know that new projects can be years in the making, from initial ideation all the way through to construction and a go-live date, but under the proposed bill, operators would have to pay for the upgrades regardless of whether they pull out or stop buying grid power.

However crucially, it's unlikely to be a blanket action that affects every region equally, because state regulators would need to consider adopting the rules on a more local basis.

What this overwhelming, bipartisan support also confirms is that data centers have become a major political discussion, with US midterm elections just around the corner and citizens increasingly worried about rising utility bills.

The Ratepayer Protection Act comes after the White House announced the Ratepayer Protection Pledge, which set out similar plans. President Trump called on major hyperscalers to "build, bring, or buy the new generation resources and electricity needed."

The difference is that the Pledge would be a voluntary move by data center operators, whereas an enforced Bill would make it a legal requirement.

Still, consumer rights org Public Citizen has criticized the Act for not going far enough. "While a federal mandate forcing states to consider such a step provides opportunities for advocates to press for consumer protections, there are a myriad of other ⁠consumer and community impacts from data centers unaddressed in this bill," Energy Program director Tyson Slocum wrote (via Reuters).

The tech industry was not ready for what came after ChatGPT. Power grids, cooling systems and data centers are being rebuilt right now because none of them were designed for the demand that arrived.

UN researchers expect AI to double the power and water that data centers use by 2030.

Had the industry known that demand was coming, it would have designed for it.

Quantum computing is early enough to do exactly that.

AI hyperscalers care about one thing: how much useful computation they get for each dollar invested.

This total cost of ownership is dominated by depreciation and power usage. In the current infrastructure buildout, they have sufficient access to capital to fund the capital expenditure but insufficient access to power.

This constraint is so acute that data centers in space are becoming an economic possibility if growth continues at this pace. But even if the AI industry matures and growth slows, total cost of ownership will dominate.

This directly translates into capital requirements and compute-per-watt being the most important metrics.

The quantum industry should care less about qubit counts and more about compute-per-watt

However, quantum computers are still sold on qubit count, and qubit count alone says nothing about economic returns on a system. What will matter at scale is how much compute-per-watt the end user gets — and this is not driven by qubit counts alone.

Take superconducting qubit processors, for instance, which are one of the quantum computing platforms most suitable for computation. They have been stuck on around 100 qubits for almost a decade. This is because on today’s chips, more than 90% of the surface is taken up by the wiring that controls the qubits and reads their answers, rather than by the qubits themselves.

The usual way around the problem is to network many small processors together. However, networking is lossy and gives sparse connections. That’s bad in classical chips, and exponentially bad in quantum chips. The work of holding the system together grows faster than the qubits it adds, and more of the power goes into running the machine than into computing with it.

This gives you higher qubit counts, but those are not equivalent to systems built with less networking: it costs you compute-per-watt.

The quantum industry should care more about experience curves

An experience curve is a simple idea: every time the total number made doubles, the cost of each one falls by a fixed amount. It is what drove down the price of solar panels and batteries, and quantum will not be an exception, but only if we build at the volumes that let the curve work.

Optimistic quantum roadmaps never talk about price reductions, when it is one of the most important problems our industry needs to solve. On today’s price per qubit, a million-qubit machine would cost somewhere between 100 billion and a trillion dollars. The cost per qubit has to fall at least a hundredfold in the coming years for quantum computers to be economically viable, which is doable, but not solved by more laboratory proof of concepts.

The transistor is the clearest case in computing itself. A single transistor once cost around a dollar. Today a chip carries billions of them, and each one costs a fraction of a cent. That fall came from decades of making more of them, driving down the cost year after year.

Costs fall the way they fell in classical computing: volume manufacturing of standardized parts combined with compounding (but not stepwise) technical progress. This requires an open architecture in which specialist companies each build one layer of the machine.

This Quantum Open Architecture — processors from one company, cryogenics from another, control electronics from a third — is what will drive specialization and in turn, drive the required economies of scale.

With the field transitioning from science to engineering, there are plenty of cool one-off demos in startups today; there are very few companies actually building the supply chain.

It matters to do this now

Quantum computers will change the world. They have the promise to change the way we do drug discovery, material development, and machine learning.

This also ties back to AI. The same workloads straining the grid today are the kind of heavy computation a quantum machine could one day take on, at a fraction of the power, once the economics are there. Getting there as fast as possible will create a massive amount of value and make all of our lives better.

The technology is progressing. But we have not focused on the economic metrics that matter, and if we don’t do so soon, we risk building an industry that makes expensive demos rather than actually useful computers. Qubit counts alone don’t matter. Building supply chains takes years, if not decades.

Whether the industrial fabrication, standardized parts and processors with exponentially more compute-per-watt will be there to achieve the economies of scale will be determined by choices made in the next few years.

We've officially passed the midway point of September 2026 — and your reward for doing so is a weekend full of thrilling television.

Indeed, our latest streaming round-up features a bumper crop of new and returning shows on the world's best streaming services. That's a good thing, too, because new movies released at home are at a premium this week.

Still, with the eagerly anticipated new seasons of Apple TV and Paramount+ Originals — among others — to enjoy, you're spoiled for choice over what you should watch first this weekend. So, scroll on to see what'll be top of your watchlist. — Tom Power, senior entertainment reporter

MobLand season 2 (Paramount+)

Look lively, gang — the Harrigans are back in town. MobLand season 2 is even more chaotic than before, and that makes for absolutely exceptional TV.

Conrad's feud with Kevin ramps up a notch, embroiling new 'fixer' Frankie in their mess as family arch-rival Kat tries to take control of London from a distance. This leaves Harry having to clean up even more mess than before, particularly considering his and Jan's impending divorce.

If you think you understand, you don't — between the Harrigans and us, it's the blind leading the blind. But, that makes tuning into Paramount+ this week all the more enriching, because everyone is prepared to take a risk. — Jasmine Valentine, entertainment reporter

Slow Horses season 6 (Apple TV)

The latest season of Slow Horses didn't trot, but rather galloped back onto Apple's streaming platform earlier this week — and with good reason. The hit thriller's sixth installment sees past and present agents of Slough House targeted by mysterious adversaries, which forces the likes of Gary Oldman's Jackson Lamb, Jack Lowden's River Cartwright, and — spoiler — the returning Olivia Cooke's Sid Baker to go on the run.

With two more seasons already in development, there'll be even more spy- and crime-based drama to enjoy sometime in 2027. Whether we'll see all of our favorite oddballs and damaged individuals return for that chapter, though, remains to be seen. — TP

Neagley (Prime Video)

If you've loved watching Reacher season 4 but absolutely hated that loyal sidekick Neagley wasn't in it, I've got the perfect solution for you. Self-titled Neagley is the spinoff you'll have been waiting for, and it's a seamless continuation of the popular Amazon TV Original.

Taking on the lead role, she's working as a private investigator in Chicago, learning that a beloved friend from her past has been killed in a suspicious accident. Obviously, Neagley is hell-bent on getting revenge and bringing the killer to justice, and puts herself on a dangerous path to uncover a menacing evil.

Who does that remind you of? It's clear to see why Neagley has become the fan-favorite that she now is... but don't think that Reacher himself is too far away from this Prime Video off-shoot. — JV

Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story (Netflix)

Another installment of Ryan Murphy's controversial Netflix anthology series... consider me sat. This time around, he's taking on the infamous story of Lizzie Borden, who was tried and acquitted of murdering of her father and stepmother in 1982.

The above trailer quickly shows how the dark nursery rhyme "Lizzie Borden took an axe, gave her mother forty whacks" took hold, or why Martin Prince plays her in the Cape Feare episode of The Simpsons (couldn't not mention him). But, trapped in a cruel Victorian-era household, there's more psychological damage here than meets the eye.

Led by Ella Beatty in the titular role, this is the first time that Monster is fully female-focused. In even better news, American Horror Story stalwart Sarah Paulson also makes an appearance as serial killer Aileen Wuornos. Go figure. — JV

Youth (HBO Max)

Sharon Horgan has made the jump to HBO Max with her latest comedy vehicle Youth, whose first two episodes drop this Sunday (September 20).

In it, the Irish writer/actor/producer plays Alex, a 50-something divorcee struggling to navigate her newfound post-marriage world. Throw having to juggle her career, family, and quest to find love again into the mix, and Alex has certainly got her hands full.

Horgan's most recent live-action TV projects have all landed well with critics and general audiences alike, so Warner Bros. will be hoping she weaves her magic with this latest venture. — TP

Best of the Best (Netflix)

The coming-of-age school dance storyline has been in dire need of a revamp for years, but Best of the Best is coming to save the day.

In it, we follow two childhood besties who join UCLA's competitive Bollywood-fusion dance team, only to find the road to the US championships is fiercer than they imagined.

Leading lady Maitreyi Ramakrishnan is truly the entertainment it-girl of the moment, meaning anything she's in is well worth streaming. Frankly, I'm just happy for an excuse to dance while I watch something. — JV

Golden Axe (Paramount+)

The first of many SEGA franchises that are getting turned into movies or TV shows over the next few years, Golden Axe is billed as a "hilarious homage to SEGA's iconic 1989 video game", and boasts a strong voice cast that includes recent Emmy double winner Matthew Rhys.

An animated offering, it sees three legendary warriors in Ax, Tyris, and Gilius reunite and embark on a quest to defeat the evil giant known as Death Adder. Unfortunately for the trio, their mission is hampered by Hampton Squid, an inexperienced adventurer who invites himself along for the ride.

All 10 episodes are out now on Paramount+, so those who like to binge watch shows and/or want to get nostalgic over the classic arcade game can do so now. — TP

The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) is urging organizations to deploy honeypots and various lures to better detect cyber-intrusions and keep hackers busy with spoofed materials. To that end, it recently published a new guidance to help businesses of different sizes and cybersecurity maturity implement these “cyber decoy strategies”.

“Many organizations struggle to detect adversaries who use legitimate credentials, native tools, and living off the land (LOTL) techniques to conduct discovery, move laterally, and access data,.” CISA said in a new security advisory.

“Cyber decoys are assets that appear to be legitimate systems, accounts, or data, but are designed to distract adversaries, detect their presence, or facilitate collection of cyber threat intelligence (CTI). As organizations adopt Zero Trust models, they should assume that a malicious threat actor may gain some level of access to their environment and plan accordingly.”

Tripwires, breadcrumbs, and honeytokens

CISA’s advisory hints that Zero Trust is the preferred way to go about securing corporate infrastructure. Zero Trust treats no user, device, or network segment as inherently trustworthy and requires organizations to operate on the assumption that compromise is inevitable, it says. However, it adds that cyber decoys are consistent with this paradigm and complement ZTNA by supporting continuous monitoring and verification, creating high-fidelity alerts for suspicious activity, reducing alert fatigue, and helping defenders detect post-compromise activity such as adversary LOTL techniques. They are also incremental, cost-effective, and scalable, and can be introduced into the cybersecurity tech stack without major architectural changes.

The guidance can be found on this link (PDF). It introduces different decoy concepts such as tripwires, breadcrumbs, and honeytokens, and uses the MITRE Engage and MITRE ATT&CK frameworks to provide the steps needed to plan, implement, and refine these operations.

Mullvad has released version 2026.10 of its Android VPN app, introducing new features designed to boost speed and security while making the overall user experience more fun.

An interactive map showing VPN server locations and an advanced multi-hop feature, alongside a few bug fixes, are the key additions in this release, currently available on GitHub.

Interestingly, Google Play has yet to list the upgrade, with Mullvad still showing the previous version 2026.08 as its latest release on the official website, too.

The new redesign was quietly announced on the cloud platform over the past two days, following months of meticulous preparation that had already included the release of new features in beta in August, with the VPN testing them for almost a month before the launch.

Meanwhile, the Sweden-based VPN continues to ensure transparency, alerting users to an issue with the new version and reflecting the accountability expected by the best VPNs.

More interaction, please

The new version features a rotating globe that highlights server locations available to users, making the discovery process more immersive and playful. Users can now zoom in, pan, scroll, and explore the globe region by region to discover the exact locations of all VPN servers, as well as view their own connection routes.

Additionally, its multi-hop function, which routes traffic through two servers for additional privacy and to make it easier to route your traffic, can now be enabled automatically when relevant settings require it and off when it is unnecessary.

The multi-hop feature is a staple of Mullvad’s functionality — indeed, it first reached Android in 2025, following earlier arrivals on desktop and iOS, when Mullvad had labelled it “a tunnel within a tunnel.”

However, by selecting the new button, you won’t need to manually enable the function, as the Android VPN app will now activate it automatically when it’s called for.

This becomes particularly relevant when DAITA, a security technique that obscures network traffic patterns to prevent interception, is enabled and the selected servers do not support it directly, but you still desire a high level of security.

Specifically, the system will now recognise this preference and will automatically activate multihop mode, as DAITA requires it or benefits from it in order to function effectively. If you disable DAITA, the system will automatically revert to a faster, single-server connection to save you bandwidth, allowing the VPN to maintain its fast speeds reputation.

The VPN has also optimised the server location search function. Specifically, the results displayed in the ‘Select location’ field are now sorted by relevance, based on how closely they match users’ queries. Approximate search results have also been included to recognise imperfect matches and improve the overall user experience.

Finally, a few bugs have also been fixed, such as the sorting of the list of positions in English and previous revocation flags appearing during an API rejection.

Fixing the bugs

Only two days ago, Mullvad released version 2026.09. However, the release contained an error that could cause the tunnel to get stuck in connecting and disconnecting when the QUIC obfuscator is used, causing the entire tunnel state machine to freeze and requiring the app to be restarted.

While the new version has indeed fixed the glitch in the previous version— and for this reason, the VPN explicitly advised to abandon version number 09 — it also warned that 2026.10 may cause the first connection attempt to fail when using features such as quantum-resistant tunnels or Daita.

A future release is expected soon to fix the connection issue, Mullvad said.

Emerald AI, Google and Nvidia have come together to form the AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA), and it could be exactly what we need to tackle rising energy consumption within the data center field.

Together, the group hopes to deploy flexible AI data centers that can dynamically adjust how much electricity they consume from the grid based on a number of different conditions.

This important development comes in response to rising power availability pressures, which are leading to years-long delays for many new projects.

Future data centers could adapt how much power they use

In an announcement, Nvidia Head of Sustainability Josh Parker explained how these future campuses could shift compute workloads, discharge storage, use paired generation or respond to other system contingencies to dynamically change how much electricity they're drawing from the grid at any given time.

The concept involves shifting high-compute tasks like training to off-peak times, using on-site batteries or generation in conjunction with the grid and exporting excess stored energy back to the grid during times of stress.

Crucially, the AEMA must now set out technical specifications, performance metrics and open standards to allow this to happen at scale.

And while only Emerald AI, Google and Nvidia are behind the alliance from launch, a number of additional partners are set to join the scheme. SiliconANGLE reports that Anthropic will be one of them.

The concept itself isn't new – Google also announced earlier this year that it had over 1GW of demand-response capacity – but doing so at scale would likely make a considerable impact across the board.

Both Nvidia and Emerald AI have already developed software to handle power consumption in relation to the grid.

"By creating a common framework for performance, reliability and collaboration, AEMA aims to help the US build the infrastructure of intelligence at the speed and sustainability the moment demands," Parker wrote.

All of this, of course, comes against a backdrop of mounting energy pressures. Recent Bloomberg data suggests that US data centers alone could use as much natural gas as the entire of Germany and Japan combined by 2035, with a similar Moody's study projecting that total US data center energy consumption could top 426 TWh by 2030.

Unsurprisingly, Guy Ritchie has wasted no time getting stuck into absolute madness in MobLand season 2.

Helpfully, he's included a season 1 recap montage before any of the new action gets underway. Conrad's (Pierce Brosnan) feud with Kevin (Paddy Considine) has reached civil war levels, with Jan (Joanne Froggatt) accidentally stabbing Harry (Tom Hardy) in the stomach while daughter Gina (Teddie Allen) made a run for it.

They've all made it through to a new season unscathed, but for how long? With MobLand season 2 episode 1 now on Paramount+, let's dig a little deeper into what's actually happened.

Conrad and Maeve open fire on the dog track after Kevin goes behind their back

As episode 1 picks up, we're down the dog track. Conrad, Maeve (Helen Mirren) and a handful of their cronies have arrived for a 'sit down' with Turkish gangster Gakbu, who we understand has entered into a drug partnership with the family.

However, Gakbu himself hasn't shown up to meet Conrad. Instead, he's approached Kevin to strike a deal, having considered Conrad to be "old news." In the heat of the moment, Kevin's only too happy to betray his dad, leaving Gakbu's brother Luca to attend the dog track face-to-face.

Within the first 10 minutes of the episode, Gakbu's henchmen are all dead, with Conrad and Maeve opening fire on the group as if they're "a real-life Bonnie and Clyde." Staff cower behind the bar in fear, while Conrad screams "We are the Harrigans! Don't know the name? Then f**king Google us."

Harry and Jan start divorce proceedings as the Harrigans hit a 'death spiral'

We then cut to Jan and Harry, who are sitting in a therapist's office. Jan discusses their "rough patch," explaining that they've struggled to make quality time for each other thanks to Harry's work, including the admission that Jan stabbed him in the stomach.

Jan reveals that Gina left a note before she left, reading "Mum, you saw a way out. There's another one… it's called a door. Gina. P.S. I wish you'd killed the c***."

Their session is interrupted when Harry gets a call from Paul (Emmett J. Scanlan) who briefs him on what's happened at Green Park Dogs. Harry, surprisingly, didn't have a clue that a meeting with Gakbu was taking place.

As DCI Kavanagh (Ophelia Lovibond) arrives at the scene, Harry tells police mole Finch (Warren Brown) to clean up the mess from the inside. Bella (Lara Pulvey) is across town meeting with a prospective team of lawyers, but Kevin pulls her out of the meeting — he's heard too, and it's no longer safe for Bella to leave in a known car.

Harry arrives at Conrad and Maeve's house, as Paul tells him that they've gone into a "death spiral." He believes that the chain of command has gone completely out of the window, and everyone is terrified of what's to come.

Harry questions Conrad about why he didn't know about the Gakbu meeting, but Maeve admits that it was her idea. She believes that his closeness with Kevin means that sensitive plans must be on a "need-to-know basis." Harry tells them at the family is now "surrounded by sharks, ripe for the picking," and theorizes that Gakbu was being controlled by Kat McAllister (Janet McTeer).

In Harry's eyes, the opposition is capitalizing on the fractures between Kevin and Conrad, meaning that a war on the family has already begun.

A witness comes forward while Maeve secretly meets with Eddie to try and get rid of Gina

As Harry leaves the house, one of the dog track waiters arrives at the police station. Finch clocks him and alerts Harry, as the waiter tells Kavanagh exactly what Conrad did.

As Maeve leaves for London, Conrad insists that new recruit Fergus (Jack Archer) goes with her. Maeve drives down the road before ordering Fergus out of the car, who chooses to spend the afternoon hiding in the bushes so he doesn't get in trouble with either of them. Harry asks Zosia (Jasmine Jobson) to follow her from a distance.

Jan officially asks Harry for a divorce, telling him "I know you love me. I know you love Gina. But it's not enough." Harry leaves once Dean, the waiter who went to the police, is found trying to return to his flat. Harry packs him into a van and drives him to an empty warehouse unit.

Dean is told to return to the police station to retract his statement, and instead claim that he was coerced into making it by Gakbu. If not, he "won't be needing his bicycle anymore."

We then see Maeve meeting Eddie (Anson Boone) in a Greasy spoon, with Zosia watching on outside. Eddie gives her a bag with £30,000 inside, claiming that it's "her cut." Eddie explains that he and Gina have been shaking down prolific YouTubers with cash to spare, offering them security in exchange for a hefty fee.

Maeve, however, isn't happy with this. She claims that she has "big plans in store," for Eddie, and they involve Gina being in the "f**king rear view mirror." Next time they meet, Maeve wants Gina taken care of... and another £50,000.

Seraphina tries to make her move on Kat McAllister as Kevin admits all to Harry

Harry pays a visit to Kevin, who explains what happened with Gakbu. He explains his theory that Gakbu is being controlled by Kat, though Kevin doesn't seem phased by this.

"She's gonna eat us piece by piece," Harry explains. "Her mob has eight trillion in cash and the world's biggest nuclear arsenal." Kevin remains convinced that "he can look after himself," despite everyone else thinking that he's the weakest link in the family.

We cut to Kat, who is giving a speech at the London Imperial College. Two notable people are in the audience: Seraphina (Mandeep Dhillon) and Colin (Toby Jones).

Seraphina gets to her first, who tells Kat that it's time for Conrad to move on. She's convinced that Harry feels the same way after saving her life at Antwerp. Kat tells Seraphina that she'd want half of all Harrigan revenue for the next five years, if she's to be trusted as a business partner.

Seraphina tries to barter this down to four, convinced that Kat is out of other options after her attempts to corrupt Harry proved futile. Kat gives her a number and tells her to call it whenever she has a conversation with another family member, and to repeat it word for word. "You wanna play in the f**king big league? Honey, you're here... and you're up to bat."

Colin offers Kat her own Harry Da Souza as Gakbu meets his maker

As Seraphina leaves, Colin arrives. Through one of his infamously long-winded historical references, Colin offers her "a brave knight to ride into battle for you," allowing Kat to keep her nose, and reputation, clean.

Describing himself as a "lowly middleman," he wants a fee to find the right person to act in Kat's interest... much like Harry does for the Harrigans. "In five years time, this man will run London with your help, and as such, you will own him. The Harrigans will be consigned to the dustbin of history" he claims.

Kat doesn't give an answer as Colin leaves, but she's clearly mulling it over. Harry, meanwhile, has gone to pay Gakbu a visit, taking every last remaining family member — and the main man — out. Zosia rings, telling Harry that he's found Gina.

Colin arrives at a house full of young men, approaching a man called Frankie (Johnny Flynn) while he uses a barbecue. "Start talking, copper," Frankie says as the scene closes out.

How do you approach a sequel? Do you refine the predecessor’s mechanics and stick with the main character? Well, Control Resonant chucks those out the window.

Instead of an open-zone map like the first game, Resonant goes full open-world. You play as Dylan Faden, old protagonist Jesse’s brother, who was (mostly) freed from the Hiss’s evil influence towards the end of the last adventure.

Now, Jesse has disappeared somewhere in an otherworldly Manhattan, and it’s his job to find her.

Like brother, like sister

Control Resonant’s story is markedly improved over its predecessor. The sibling bond between Dylan and Jesse provides an emotional anchor to latch onto. Learning about their childhoods through the main missions was engaging enough and made it much easier to follow this time around. It kept my attention in ways that Control didn’t.

The small cast of support characters also smartly keeps the character development focused mainly on Dylan. Zoe De Vera is assigned as Dylan’s handler, and I like how their relationship starts off rocky with her viewing him as just a tool to fight the Hiss. But as the story progresses, Zoe starts considering Dylan as more than that, asking him personal questions about his favorite music.

Emily Pope returns from the first game and acts as an important linchpin for Dylan to discuss Jesse. As Emily helped Jesse throughout the entirety of Control, Dylan can confide in Emily, giving him hope he’ll eventually find his sister. These powerful relationships make Resonant a less lonely trip.

As someone who’s fascinated with sci-fi and the occult, Resonant plays around with common tropes to great effect. In one particularly memorable main quest, Dylan is tasked with figuring out what happened to a missing crew, and its implementation of time dilation and alternate timelines really had a grip on my attention. It’s moments like these that make Resonant’s story emotionally satisfying, but narratively absorbing too.

Go big or go home

Going from Control to Control Resonant feels similar to how Final Fantasy 7 Remake transitioned to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. It’s a high-risk endeavor, as creating an open world can add a lot of unnecessary bloat compared to a more streamlined experience.

Thankfully, Resonant’s exemplary art direction and traversal mechanics make its distorted version of Manhattan a treat to run around in. Rather than the brutalist architecture of the first game that took place entirely indoors within the Oldest House, Resonant doubles down on the more kaleidoscopic and parallactic aspects in the open world.

As part of the main quests, you’ll also be given objectives to find “Faults,” which are areas where remnants of Jesse could be residing. While they’re not very combat-heavy, they offer a lot of story exposition exploring Dylan and Jesse’s background. At the very end, you’ll be awarded a new way for Dylan to move around.

These include being able to shift his gravitational orientation around so the wall next to him becomes the floor, or the intriguing take on the traditional grappling hook, which looks more like an invisible magnet pulling Dylan by the waist.

Control Resonant is also reminiscent of Elden Ring, in that you’re able to tackle tough side bosses called Resonants all across the Big Apple. By defeating them, Dylan is able to unlock more of his offensive move kit. You’re incentivized to go for it, as it’ll give you more options to fight against the Hiss and other enemies.

You only need to take out a few to advance the story, but afterwards you can actually complete it without taking the rest of them on if you want. This open-endedness comes in handy if you get stuck on a certain story boss. You can explore more, get stronger, and return later.

There are also plenty of other interesting activities to tackle, and these often bring a more down-to-earth tone to Resonant’s paranormal twists. In a multi-part side quest, Dylan is trying to help a girl find her way home from an alternate dimension. And he has to play “spot the difference” with different taxi cabs to take the right one back. There’s another side quest where Dylan helps a colleague find their invisible cat, which ends up in the cat actually helping out against a mini-boss fight in a humorous conclusion.

These side quests reflect Dylan’s altruism and the guilt he harbors for his actions from the first game, allowing him to redeem himself in small, yet meaningful ways. They also reward massive amounts of EXP and useful ingredients to unlock new skills and abilities.

Close quarters combat

As opposed to the first game’s third-person shooter gameplay, Control Resonant is a melee-focused action game. It’s an interesting switch-up that certainly helps this sequel differentiate itself.

The basic gameplay loop you’re going for is to stagger enemies and then perform an execution. Doing that causes Dylan to temporarily enter Dominance, which astronomically ups his attack power and allows him to kill enemies quicker. It’s a gratifying process that’s just as exciting as it looks cool.

The big issue here is that it’s incredibly difficult to falter enemies when you first start out. Dylan’s weapon, the Aberrant, can morph into different forms for both his light and heavy attacks. At the beginning, you can pick one form, and the rest you can create later on with the proper drops and materials.

If you’re like me and picked a heavy weapon choice that didn’t fit your particular playstyle, then you’re going to have a tough time. You can use limited reset points to rechoose your points and abilities, but the fact that it’s not free feels like it’s discouraging experimentation, especially at the start before eventually unlocking everything.

After initially selecting the spear as my heavy weapon and being disappointed, I reset my build and opted for the slow but powerful hammer instead. I found that it fit my approach much better, and suddenly I was enjoying it more. Beforehand, combat felt like a slog as enemies seemed to just be damage sponges, as it took forever to falter them.

A little later on, after defeating the giant fire Resonant, I unlocked the ability to cloak my weapons in flame, increasing both the damage and falter output. Now even my light weapon attacks with the multi-target scythe-like glaive inflicted a decent amount of stagger. I was able to enter Dominance faster, and the combat became more frenetic, explosive, and most importantly, fun.

It just takes a while to get to.

Accessibility features

Control Resonant has an impressive suite of accessibility features. These options include text, subtitles, colorblindness adjustments, and toggles.

It also has an Assist mode, which lets you change gameplay parameters to your liking. For example, you can change how fast Dylan’s Power meter replenishes, which lets him fire off special abilities. You can also make him invincible.

There’s even an option to OHKO enemies with just one attack, and it works on bosses too. None of the options disable Achievements either.

How I reviewed Control Resonant

I played 25 hours of Control Resonant on Xbox Series X with the standard Xbox Wireless Controller on my 1080p LG Sharp TV, finishing up the main campaign while completing some side quests.

After witnessing the ending, you can go back into the open world once again to mop up any remaining collectibles and quests.

Not to worry, Diablo 4 fans! Despite the announcement of Diablo 5, Blizzard swears it will continue supporting the popular action-RPG "for a long time."

In an interview with TechRadar Gaming at BlizzCon, game director Brent Gibson quickly put concerns to rest and stated outright that players don't need to worry about the game's future, even though the studio is already working on the sequel.

"If you're wearing the sign in the middle of Times Square that says 'The End is Nigh', the end is not nigh," Gibson said. "We have a lot coming," he added before acknowledging the Amazon class pack, coming to Diablo 4 in 2027.

"The train isn't stopping," he continued. "One of the things that I love about our world is we're not a series of games. We are a universe. We are even adding to Diablo 2 with that of the Warlock. It's one of the few franchises where we have the luxury to continue to play, and we know our communities are there multiple communities that make us a whole."

Gibson reiterated that if you're a fan and you're worried, "don't sweat it," because even though the team is excited about Diablo 5, "we're going to be making content for a long time" and "we've got a lot of things coming," including the Netflix adaptation.

"The train is not stopping," he said. "Hold on tight. Gone are the years of waiting 10 years for more content, right? So it's a great place to be at."

Diablo 5 is slated to launch in 2029, so there are few years to wait. In the meantime, Diablo 4 fans can sink their teeth into Season of Hell's Legacy, the game's 15th season, which arrived on September 15.

The initial preorder window has now closed, and the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max have officially launched. Those who ordered a device early should finally be receiving one today or in the next few days. If you didn't preorder, though, it's not all bad news.

Most of the best deals that were available during the preorder period are still on the table. If you've been waiting to pick up one of Apple's latest Pro devices, there are still plenty of ways to save. I've laid out the biggest savings for both the US and UK down below.

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 / £1,199, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299 / £1,299. While those are the official starting prices, there are several ways to get either device for less, particularly if you're willing to trade in an existing phone or sign up for a new carrier plan. Note that some carriers are facing slightly delayed delivery times, but both devices are still readily available to order at most outlets.

In the US, it's possible to get an iPhone 18 Pro included with either a new line (with a pricey unlimited plan) or a qualifying trade-in at the major carriers. Apple's own offers include a trade-in rebate of up to $885 for unlocked devices, alongside its new leasing option, which I'm covering in more depth just below.

In the UK, we're currently looking at trade-in rebates of up to £885 at Apple, which is actually quite good in terms of discounts for the official store. Several networks are also stocking the devices, including Three and Vodafone, giving shoppers more options now that the phones have officially launched.

Apple iPhone 18 Pro: what's new?

• A20 Pro chipset on both models
• Improved battery life
• New variable aperture lens, plus photographic styles

The star of the show in this year's September Apple event was undoubtedly the iPhone Duo, but that doesn't mean the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max aren't without their merits. In fact, both devices have a decent number of upgrades that could justify a trade-in, depending on what you're eligible for.

For example, both devices now carry the new A20 chipset. While we haven't tested this to confirm, Apple claims the new chipset delivers a claimed 20% faster CPU and 40% faster GPU than its predecessor due to its 2nm architecture. Battery life has also improved, with the iPhone 18 Pro offering up to 36 hours of video playback, matching last year's 17 Pro Max, while the 18 Pro Max reaches up to 45 hours.

The biggest upgrades, however, are arguably focused on the 18 Pro's camera. The devices now feature a 48MP main camera with variable aperture and a new sensor. In layman's terms, that means better low-light performance and greater user control over depth of field. There's also talk of a "computational imaging pipeline", which includes new Photographic Styles for share-ready JPEGS.

New Lasso research has revealed that AI watermarking could actually unintentionally change how LLMs behave following the testing of Google DeepMind's SynthID-Text.

The company's researchers found that SynthID-Text can change whether models refuse harmful requests, their susceptibility to prompt injection, which tools AI agent choose and more.

However, at its core, SynthID-Text and other similar watermarking is only designed to hide a machine-readable indicator as to whether text was AI-generated or human-written.

Researchers find that AI watermarking can unintentionally change AI behavior

The "watermarking procedure can therefore affect both what the model says and what an agent does," Lasso concludes, referring to the side effect as "sampling drift."

One of the biggest concerns highlighted by the paper is that, even without an attack, watermarking changed some of the models' refusal decisions, making them more willing to answer potentially harmful prompts. Combined with prompt injection, Lasso found the consequences more amplified.

Despite the unintended consequences, Anthropic recently announced that future generations of Claude would use AI watermarking similar to Google DeepMind's, stressing that one of the key drivers was to adhere to the EU AI Act. With that in mind, AI watermarking is set to become far more mainstream across other model providers, making these mishaps far more common and leading to further security concerns.

Ultimately, Lasso urges developers to rerun benchmarks, safety evaluations and other tests to check for any unintended consequences, rather than just applying it blindly to existing configurations.

"These findings make reassessment important whenever watermarking is introduced or its configuration or key changes," Lasso concludes, stressing that the work shouldn't be taken as an argument against AI watermarking for provenance.

Additionally, the research presents a new angle on AI watermarking, because until now researchers have largely focused on whether watermarks can be both applied and detected effectively. Few have uncovered such security-focused consequences as this one.

The Steam Machine now has a whole raft of repair guides from iFixit, which is great to see – although they have highlighted some fiddly and less-than-ideal aspects when it comes to working inside Valve's compact PC.

TechPowerUp spotted (via VideoCardz) that iFixit published 18 repair guides for the Steam Machine, which cover essential maintenance or the replacement of parts in the device.

It's a thorough set of instructional guides, detailing how to replace parts of the chassis or the Steam Machine's fan, and carry out key upgrades to the RAM and SSD. It even shows you how to replace the motherboard, and how to properly clean and maintain the Steam Machine.

Valve has a partnership with iFixit which has produced a similarly in-depth collection of guides for the Steam Deck, and also sells replacement parts for that handheld, from thumbsticks and bumper buttons through to a new screen or battery. Replacement parts are reportedly coming for the Steam Machine, too, though they aren't on sale yet.

Analysis: easy does it with some of these repairs

This is great, and what I particularly like is the cleaning guide, which is an effective reminder of what a dust magnet PCs can be — and to keep the innards of the Steam Machine relatively dust-free.

However, what this also makes clear, as noted at the outset, is that some of the replacement procedures are relatively tricky — notably upgrading (or replacing) the system RAM.

Okay, so it's nothing too bad if you take your time and work carefully, but there are a lot of steps — 49, in fact, and that's to reach the memory to replace it (then you have to reverse those steps and put the Steam Machine back together). This isn't something that less tech-savvy people will be able to do, at least not without running a serious risk of breaking something else in the process.

Indeed, I'd say you'd need to be pretty confident in your abilities to perform a RAM replacement. Removing the fan is one of most awkward steps, and one method involves heating the glue (with a hair drier if you don't have iFixit's iOpener heat pad) to make the two attached antennas easier to detach. This, and a few other fiddlier aspects, are where I could see something quite easily going awry.

As one of the readers of VideoCardz observed: "Upgrading RAM is super annoying. They should place it near SSD or something in the next revision, because as it is now you have to basically dismantle the whole damn thing. Not that it's particularly 'hard' to do, but it's super annoying and you can actually damage something, like Wi-Fi antennas for example."

Still, I can't knock the quality of the guides, and the thoroughness of the step-by-step instructions, complete with diagrams and information about exactly which way you should orientate the device when moving onto the next step.

Of course, you won't be able to perform repairs until you have the replacement parts, and hopefully iFixit will stock these before long (as it does with the Steam Deck). Right now, parts are obviously thin on the ground, as Valve needs them for manufacturing as many Steam Machines as it can, but that situation will change in time.

Breakout affordable audiophile brand Fiio has been riding high with its debut planar magnetic headphones, launched in 2024, called the FT5 — they scored the full five stars in our Fiio FT5 review. The brand clearly thought it was time to revisit the tech, because it's launched a follow-up. No, not the FT6; meet the Fiio FT15.

These new wired open-back headphones bring refinements across the board, including some new internals and a lighter build. Numbers are up (or down, depending on which direction counts as an improvement).

The price is up too. The new FT15 cost $499 / £499 (about AU$999), and for comparison the FT5 sold for $449 / £429 / AU$799. So it's not a huge price hike, but given that Fiio is reliable as a budget brand, it's notable.

The Fiio FT15 are on sale right away, joining the brand's growing 2026 roster including the KA15 DAC dongle and FG3 gaming headset. Here's why they're exciting to audiophiles who are, well, maybe not quite on a budget, but like to optimize their spending.

Thinner, Better, Faster, Lighter

Fiio decided that its new planar cans needed some spec increases, and so the driver now measures 101mm (compared to 90mm in the FT5), but most notable is that it's now 800nm thick, which Fiio says is 86.7% thinner than its previous planar driver.

That's pretty notable, because the whole thing about planar drivers is that you have a super-thin, super-responsive diaphragm suspended between two magnetic fields, capable of excellent dynamic response and therefore detail.

Fiio also says the driver has a "full-face diamond coating", which is presumably to add stiffness. A much larger, much thinner, super-stiff diaphragm is a very interesting prospect when it comes to both dynamic range and detail in the sound.

The overall design has seen some improvements too. The FT15 is 31g lighter than the FT5, at 425g, using a carbon fiber headband and natural wood earcups. There are also multiple pairs of earpads in the box, as well as a range of adaptors for 4.4mm, 6.35mm and XLR-4, so it can fit into a range of hi-fi set-ups.

That's doubly true with the FT15s' sensitivity (95dB/mW, and a 24 ohms impedance), and the brand says it was designed to work with a range of dongles, DAPs, amps and CD players — including smaller and lighter dongles without external power. Fiio also sells all this kind of tech. Coincidence? I think not.

We gave the FT5 a perfect review, and it's hard to imagine how this range of improvements could result in a lower one, even with a slight price increase — but is with anything audio-related, the proof will be in the testing. Stay tuned.

Blizzard has confirmed that Diablo 4 won't receive any more expansions, as it will continue the game's story through seasons, something the team is glad about.

BlizzCon 2026 has officially wrapped, and there were plenty of announcements for fans across the board, including the huge reveal of Diablo 5, slated for a 2029 launch, as well as Diablo 4 - Season of Hell's Legacy, the game's 15th season and the centerpiece of Blizzard's 30th Anniversary celebration for Diablo.

"Amid the dead rising from Pandemonium, the lost soul of the legendary Horadrim Deckard Cain returns with dire news," the questline description reads. "Three dark wanderers have returned, each leaving a trail of death in their wake. Confront them and delve into the nightmares of their horrific past. Only there can you defeat the Prime Evils that torment them and lay their souls to rest."

No additional expansions are planned at the moment, and although Lord of Hatred was the big conclusion of the overarching narrative, the team will now use seasons to continue the game's story, presumably until Diablo 5 is ready for launch.

The game will likely be supported for a good few years to come, just like Diablo 3, but the new direction the team is working on removes the constraints it had before.

"I think it's liberating," game director Brent Gibson told TechRadar Gaming at BlizzCon. "So we completed the story, but the butterfly effect can take us anywhere, you know? And we've got season 15 with all the events of pandemonium leading to someone else taking the mantle of death," before teasing, "Who is it? I'm not going to answer that today."

He added, "But it allows us to be really creative with all the pieces that we have, now that we hit the beat that we were all looking forward to with confronting Mephisto. So, I say it's liberating."

• Defenses: scrutinize suspicious invites, verify senders, and treat ICS attachments with caution

ICS phishing - the type of phishing that abuses calendar files (.ics) is set to increase by around 33,000% between May and September 2026. This is according to a new report by cybersecurity researchers Sublime, who argue that this type of phishing has finally “hit the mainstream”.

The methodology is simple - the attacker uses a free service, such as Gmail, and sends a calendar invite to the target. Since both services are legitimate and free, the attacks bypass most email security filters and can be done at scale with close to zero cost.

Furthermore, the victim is exposed to the attack twice: once in the inbox, and once in their calendar. Inside the calendar invite is usually a link to download a maliciously configured remote management and monitoring (RMM) solution such as ScreenConnect. The attackers can use the tool to take over the compromised endpoint, deploying stage-two malware such as infostealers or ransomware, and grabbing passwords, documents, and other valuable secrets.

Spiking in popularity

ICS phishing started increasing in popularity roughly a year ago, but has been really picking up speed lately. Between May and June it increased 282%, and between June and July - 338%.

Between July and August it rose 1,216%, and in just the first half of September it rose 1,426% over the full month of August. Projections for the entire month of September, over August, are 2,852%, Sublime says.

“The jumps in August and September appear to be indicators that this attack type has finally hit the mainstream,” the researchers explained. “To really drive that point home, the increase from May to September is projected to be ~33,000%.”

Defending against these attacks is best done with a little common sense, the researchers conclude. Users should be mindful of the telltale signs, such as suspicious CTAs, suspicious senders, and the usual financial urgency.

The beauty in the world (and the universe) around us can be shown at the smallest scales as well as the largest, as demonstrated by the annual Nikon Small World in Motion competition. The competition aims to showcase "the beauty and complexity of life as seen through the light microscope", and the 2026 winners have now been announced.

First prize this year goes to a video of airway cilia (tiny hair-like protein structures that stick out from some cells), captured at 100x magnification via diffractive super-resolution microscopy. The cilia are there to process mucus and carry waste out of the airways, though they're actually colorless — the green color here is artificially added.

There is a sad element to the story: these are the airways of a child with Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD), a rare genetic disorder that means the cilia don't work as they should, and mucus isn't as effectively cleared out. That's why these little structures are waving irregularly, rather than in one uniform, smooth movement.

The condition is a serious one, but usually manageable with the right treatment, and super-close-up videos like this one help scientists learn more about it. "To understand this disease, you need to watch the cilia through dozens of beat cycles, not just a still image," says Dr. Ning Xu, who captured the footage.

Microscopy as a shared language

Xu is an optical engineering researcher who helps develop imaging systems for scientists to use. He's currently a fellow at the National University of Singapore, and has previously worked with researchers at Tsinghua University, the University of Cambridge, Beijing Children's Hospital, and the California Institute of Technology.

He's also apparently a big fan of the Nikon Small World in Motion competition. "When people watch cilia beating, they immediately understand that something beautiful and important is happening inside us," says Xu. "I think this competition turns microscopy into a shared language."

Second place in this year's competition was awarded to a video of a tiny roundworm and a single-cell organism interacting at 40x magnification, captured by Nguyen Nam Nhat. In third place was Benedikt Pleyer's footage of jellyfish larvae suspended in water droplets, recorded at a magnification of 25x.

The fourth place entry shows the process of synchronized cell division in neighboring cells, as captured by Dr. Andrew Moore at 63x magnification, while fifth place in the 2026 awards was given to Dr. Patrick C. Hickey's 40x magnification recording of the cell power plants mitochondria interacting with chloroplasts in Turtle Vine leaf cells.

• Garmin Cirqa users’ workouts are disappearing when they’re finished
• Garmin is apparently investigating the issue
• For now, there’s a temporary workaround that can help

We loved Garmin’s screenless Cirqa tracker when we reviewed it earlier this year, but that doesn’t mean it’s a perfect device. And that’s exactly what some Garmin users have discovered recently, with the device seemingly deleting many people’s workouts as soon as they’re finished.

The issue has surfaced in reports posted on Garmin’s support forum. There, users have complained that workouts are not logged when they are ended in a certain way, despite the Garmin Connect app showing the exercise in progress and the Cirqa wearable vibrating to indicate it has received the instruction to end the session.

Specifically, users noted that the problem arose if they began a workout using the dedicated button on their Cirqa, then ended it in the Connect app. When that happened, the session seemingly went missing. As one forum member put it, “If you start an activity with the button, you have to end it with the button.”

Garmin appears to be aware of the bug, with a company representative posting a potential solution on the forum. There, the rep said that “if an activity is started from the CIRQA, Garmin Connect may first display an ‘Activity in Progress’ message with Resume and End options. Selecting Resume opens the activity recording screen, where the activity can then be stopped and saved. Once the activity is saved and a sync has completed, it should appear in Garmin Connect.”

Confusion and frustration

What’s confusing about this bug — and what has clearly rankled many members in the Garmin forum — is how a logical action is having the opposite effect to the one that is expected. You would think that ending a workout in the Garmin Connect app should automatically log the workout’s details, regardless of whether the exercise was started in the app or on the Cirqa itself. Instead, the workout is apparently deleted.

The good news is that Garmin appears to be aware of the issue, as the company rep followed up with another message acknowledging that “Several users in this thread have reported losing activity data after selecting End from the initial prompt.”

They then explained that “We’ve shared the feedback mentioned in this thread internally for further review, and are reaching out to some users to gather additional information.” Despite that, there’s not yet any solid date for when a fix might arrive.

The news comes at the same time as another report of glitchy Garmin behavior (via the5krunner). People using the Garmin Fenix 9 smartwatch with Mac computers have noticed that the Garmin Express app — which updates the watch’s software and installs offline maps — is not compatible with the latest macOS 27 release. That’s because it’s not compatible with Apple silicon chips and requires Apple’s Rosetta 2 translation layer, which has been removed from macOS 27.

While most Fenix 9 functions can be managed in the Garmin Connect app, the Express app issue will still be irritating in some scenarios. In this instance, Garmin has said it is working on a fix.

If you’ve noticed disappearing workouts with the Cirqa wearable, though, there could be a longer wait, as Garmin has not announced when a patch might land. For now, you’ll have to remember to start and end workouts on the Cirqa itself or use the workaround provided by the Garmin forum rep.

• The company already has partnerships abroad, and previous reports suggested Starlink Mobile was planning to launch a rival to conventional carriers

Starlink Mobile is barely off the ground in the US yet, with its service primarily offered through the dead zone-filling T-Satellite service in partnership with T-Mobile. But we know the brand has bigger mobile ambitions — and it now seems they won’t be limited to the US.

Following reports that SpaceX was planning to build a Starlink-branded mobile network in the US, the company — as spotted by NotebookCheck — has now received approval from the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) to offer international telecommunications services.

This, at a minimum, could allow Starlink Mobile to offer those dead zone-filling capabilities to US customers when they’re roaming abroad, but it also opens the door to Starlink Mobile services being offered directly to residents of other countries, rather than them only being available through partnerships with other networks.

And we know Starlink plans to level up its mobile service, with 5G-level capabilities and download speeds of up to 150Mbps, all beamed from satellites in space.

Those capabilities, coupled with its existing ability to deliver coverage where conventional mobile networks struggle, could make it either a major boon to carriers it partners with or a significant rival if SpaceX sets up a standalone alternative to the likes of T-Mobile and Verizon.

Starlink mobile services are already rolling out in numerous countries

Any rival service is probably still a way off, especially as the company might need to build some more traditional network infrastructure to compete with conventional carriers in densely populated areas.

But SpaceX is already starting to partner with carriers globally. For example, it recently announced a partnership with Japanese telecommunications company KDDI to offer “Starlink Mobile V2,” which will apparently offer “100x the data density, and will enable native calls, high-speed apps, streaming and more.”

And with this FCC green light, we might one day see Starlink Mobile services offered directly to customers both in the US and abroad, rather than through partnerships alone.

New research from StackGen analyzing nearly 178,000 public technology incidents found AI-related incidents now account for more than one in 10 reported outages, roughly six times the rate in 2023.

AI agents have deleted data, databases, or live systems autonomously. Those agents acted with valid credentials, meaning traditional monitoring did not identify anything unusual until the damage was done.

With AI becoming embedded in business processes across claims processing, coding, customer support, decision support, fraud detection, HR, risk analysis, and supply chain planning, outages and unintended outcomes are a growing risk throughout the enterprise. And while the risk may feel unprecedented or novel, established resilience practice provides the path forward.

AI is creating often-unseen dependencies and risk

AI-embedded business processes are just one aspect of enterprise AI risk.

AI is also accelerating cyber risk for enterprises. Attackers can now employ AI to scale deepfakes, phishing, social engineering, reconnaissance, and develop exploits.

Additionally, AI systems may change behavior over time, creating drift and explainability gaps. This is most likely when AI data sources, integrations, models, and prompts change.

Enterprise employees and teams may be using unapproved AI tools with sensitive information or in business-critical workflows. This shadow AI also creates significant enterprise risk.

Meanwhile, AI adoption is creating operating dependencies faster than governance is maturing.

Recovery complexity adds another layer of risk.

If an AI-enabled workflow fails, produces incorrect decisions, or becomes unavailable, organizations may not know the business impact or have a manual fallback. This can leave enterprises without valid recovery strategies while trying to determine the scope and consequences of a problem while the disruption is already unfolding.

AI failures may be new, but the resilience requirement is familiar: Organizations need to understand what depends on AI, what happens when those dependencies fail, what the business stands to lose, and where action matters most.

Organizations also need to determine whether backup models can be used during disruptions in addition to putting deterministic or even manual solutions in place as workarounds. If AI is the only option, you may have a single point of failure.

Many enterprises are exposed without realizing it.

Understanding probabilistic and deterministic processes

As AI becomes embedded in business operations, every business needs to stop and ask which processes can tolerate answers that are “probably right” and which cannot. An AI-generated recommendation used to inform a decision will likely tolerate “probably right” answers; a process that executes a financial transaction, determines a regulatory obligation, or controls a critical operation cannot. Those require a predictable, repeatable result.

The questions become where can we tolerate the uncertainty AI introduces, and what happens to the business when the answer is wrong?

To answer those questions, you need to understand the business. What are the critical services it provides and what are the processes, technology, people and third parties they depend on? With that context, organizations can evaluate AI risk through four business questions:

What is impacted? If an AI-enabled process fails or produces an incorrect result, which business services, customers, operations, and dependencies are affected?

What happens next? How could that failure propagate or create downstream consequences?

What is the financial exposure? What could the resulting disruption, error, or delay cost the organization?

What should we prioritize? Where are additional controls, human oversight, fallback processes, or other resilience measures most important?

AI risk becomes a business decision about consequence and tolerance. They help organizations determine where probabilistic outcomes are acceptable, where additional safeguards are required, and where the potential impact is too significant to tolerate uncertainty.

Making explainability a buying criterion

If a vendor can't clearly explain how and why its model reaches an output, that is more than a feature gap. It can become an unquantified source of business risk.

As Harvard Business Review (HBR) explains, even if an enterprise outsources AI technology, it owns the risk. HBR points to recent lawsuits against Cigna, iTutorGroup, Peloton, and Workday as examples, noting “courts and regulators are holding [the enterprises that use AI systems they did not build] responsible when those tools discriminate, mishandle data, or harm customers.”

Compliance and legal problems can quickly lead to financial and reputational damage through competitive disadvantage, lost customers or customer trust, investor sell-offs, higher capital costs, and stock price drops.

When selecting suppliers, businesses should therefore evaluate whether AI-assisted outputs can be explained, audited, and defended to regulators. Explainability should be considered alongside cost, performance, security, and reliability, rather than addressed after deployment.

Map dependencies to prevent single points of failure

Whether it's one model an entire workflow depends on or a supplier your vendor depends on, reliance on AI and frontier models has created new concentration risk. Dependency mapping matters as much when managing AI risk as it does in other critical supplier relationships and, since we’re still in the early years, its importance will grow as adoption grows.

Understanding model and data dependencies is key because AI outputs are only as reliable as the data, context, and controls behind them. And because enterprises are adopting AI through cloud platforms, data services, model providers, and third-party applications they don’t fully control, enterprises also need to understand the downstream consequences if one of those dependencies becomes unavailable or unreliable.

Recent events demonstrate how quickly disruption can spread beyond its apparent point of origin. The Persian Gulf conflict disrupted global oil flow and created pressure in supply chains across agriculture, manufacturing, semiconductor, and transportation.

The ransomware attack on Change Healthcare similarly demonstrated how disruption at one highly connected organization can create operational consequences across an entire ecosystem, forcing healthcare organizations to use manual processes and other workarounds.

AI creates the same dependency challenge, as the recent OpenAI outage shows. When it, as a foundational AI provider, became unavailable, the disruption extended to the services and applications, like ChatGPT and Codex, built on top of it.

A model provider, data source, cloud service, or AI agent may appear to support one application while actually sitting upstream of dozens of business processes. Without mapping those relationships, enterprises cannot reliably determine the broader impact when something fails.

Cataloging AI agents as assets

AI agents are proliferating across enterprises at a rapid rate. Failing to keep track of these agents can create a form of shadow AI risk.

For example, if an employee or team responsible for an AI agent leaves or changes focus, that orphaned AI agent may continue running without the necessary ownership or oversight. An AI agent may retain permissions to access data it no longer needs. AI agents that fall outside of enterprise awareness and management can also lead to compliance and audit failures, excessive autonomy, incident response blind spots, uncontrolled costs, and other problems.

Catalog agents the same way you catalog other critical assets. Enterprises should know what each agent does, who owns it, which systems and data it can access, which business processes depend on it, and what happens if it fails or behaves unexpectedly.

That visibility gives organizations a clearer understanding of their AI environment, their exposure, and the controls needed to manage it.

Enterprise resilience helps organizations stay ahead of disruption

AI is just one area of enterprise risk, but its rapid adoption is creating new dependencies across critical operations.

That makes AI risk an executive- and board-level concern. Organizations that build resilience into how AI is adopted, governed, and managed across the enterprise will be better positioned to absorb disruption without losing control of the business.

While taking part in an OpenAI bug bounty program, a group of Hacktron security researchers managed to compromise an internal OpenAI ChatGPT account and access internal company code on Github.

According to the Wall Street Journal, who first reported the incident, the researchers used a “special version” of Anthropic’s Claude made available to “qualified cybersecurity practitioners” to pull off the attack.

The researchers initially attempted to use Claude Opus 4.8 to create a breach, but faced multiple setbacks as the model “struggled across several sessions to produce a working exploit.” But the release of Opus 5 changed everything.

OpenAI breach part of wider libheif exploit

The breach started with a libheif exploit that abuses a flaw in the .heic/.heif/.avif image file format decoder and encoder. While this exploit allowed Hacktron to breach OpenAI, libheif is also used across other platforms and software including Slack, Meta, GitHub Enterprise, Ruby on Rails, and more.

To start, the researchers first noted that the OpenAI community forum relies on the Discourse platform, which in turn relies on FastImage for image checks. But FastImage does not support .heif image files, and these are passed on to ImageMagick for conversion instead.

Developing a working code-execution exploit that abused this relation between ImageMagick and libheif with Opus 4.8 “wasn’t fruitful”, the researchers said, but on the same day Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.

With Opus 5, the researchers managed to create a working local remote code execution (RCE) using the same premise by setting an AI agent in a loop to exploit a local Discourse Cloud instance.

The successful Discourse exploit was then used against the OpenAI community forums, where the researchers hijacked an OpenAI employee’s ChatGPT account. The employee had connected their ChatGPT Codex with the company’s Github, allowing the researchers full repo access.

Exploit needed just a few hours of human interaction

Where the researchers spent hours struggling to create a working exploit with Opus 4.8, the release of Opus 5 showed that “every new model is getting increasingly capable." It took the agent running on Opus 5 just a few hours to develop a working exploit.

The full timeline from initial discovery of the exploit to OpenAI repo access took just 72 hours, researchers noted.

The researchers also said that the entire OpenAI and Discourse hack “took a few days for an agent, and just a few hours of human time” in order to be successful. Furthermore, their research into the libheif exploit against organizations such as Slack, Zoom, Meta “took two-months, cost less than $3,000 in tokens in total, and was conducted by three researchers.”

“The AI started almost blind and adapted the exploit for each company within one or two days,” the researchers said. “We are not aware of any company that detected the activity except Shopify, even after thousands of images were sent and their image processors repeatedly crashed.”

In return for exposing the vulnerabilities, Hacktron was awarded a $6,500 bounty from OpenAI, and the libheif vulnerability has been patched.

AI agents are the future, for better or for worse

Hacktron's exploit demonstration shows how prevalent AI agents are becoming in cybersecurity. Where they have been lauded by AI companies to provide productivity bonuses and efficiency increases to workers, the same can be said for attackers.

The fact that it took just 72 hours from exploit discovery to full repo access highlights the dangers. By setting an AI agent to run on a continuous loop until it creates a workable exploit dramatically shifts the exploit timeline from weeks or months in the case of non-AI assisted attacks to mere hours for attackers aided by agents.

This is a similar circumstance to OpenAI's own accidental breach of Hugging Face during testing of AI agents. The agents were essentially told to complete a test scenario by any means necessary, which the agents interpreted as permission to go beyond their alignment and hack into a third-party environment that they thought held the key to solving their task.

"AI has been changing the threat landscape for a while now, and the defence landscape with it," Spencer Starkey, Executive VP EMEA at SonicWall said. "But there's a conversation we're not having loudly enough: do you actually want your security platform to have been built by AI, with no human track record behind it?"

"It looks compelling. You have low cost, high margins, slick interface. But what happens when something goes wrong at 02:00 in the morning and you need someone who knows the product, knows your environment, and has seen that problem before? An AI-built platform with zero employees can't give you that.

"Why go with an established vendor when a newer option does 90% of the same things for half the price? It's a fair question. But the 10% you're trading away is usually accountability, resilience, and institutional knowledge. Exactly what matters most when you're under attack.

"It looks like due diligence is eroding, and that worries me. Shiny and affordable is a powerful combination…for magpies. But in cyber security, the cost of a bad supplier decision doesn't show up until the moment you can least afford it, so don’t be a magpie," Starkey concluded.
