India vs South Africa: preview
India and South Africa have a chance to size each other up at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, in a clash that could well be a preview of the Cricket World Cup final. The unbeaten Men in Blue became the first team to officially book their place in the knockouts in midweek, and the Proteas joined them yesterday.
That man Virat Kohli matched the great Sachin Tendulkar's record for the most ODI centuries in the first session, notching a masterly 101 to leave South Africa chasing 327 for the win.
There's no doubt that the hosts have been the standout team of the tournament, but what they did to Sri Lanka on Thursday was so jaw-dropping is bordered on cruel. After challenging them to pull off the highest run chase in Cricket World Cup history, India skittled them for 55 by putting on one of the finest displays of seam bowling you're ever likely to see.
When Sri Lanka were at 3-4 it had genuinely looked like they wouldn't make it to double-figures. Mohammed Siraj's 3-16 set the tone, but Mohammed Shami stole the show again with a 5-18 to go along with his five-for against New Zealand and four-for against England. He's now India's all-time leading World Cup wicket-taker, with 45 from just 14 games.
South Africa's 190-run mauling of New Zealand ended up being overshadowed as a result, and that suits the Proteas just fine. They've snuck under the radar throughout the tournament, despite Quinton de Kock leading the run count and Marco Jansen standing as one of the tournament's top wicket-takers with 16.
India team: Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj
South Africa team: Quinton de Kock (wk), Temba Bavuma (c), Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Tabraiz Shamsi
