So New Zealand, currently in the final berth for semi-final qualification, will set the target for the other semi-final contenders – Pakistan and Afghanistan. New Zealand, having won their first four games, are now on a four-game losing streak. A fifth successive defeat will dictate that the Black Caps would not make the semi finals if either of the other semi-final contenders win their final games – Afghanistan meet South Africa on Friday in Ahmedabad and Pakistan play England on Saturday in Kolkata.

A win for the Kiwis would mean that they could only be overtaken on net run rate, and currently theirs is comfortably superior to those of the other two. For example, presuming New Zealand only beat Sri Lanka narrowly, that would still require Pakistan to beat England by something in the order of 130 runs to overhaul New Zealand. Afghanistan’s net run rate is so poor that their chance of overtaking New Zealand’s one is virtually nil.

Sri Lanka’s focus is on making the top eight in the table and thereby qualifying for the Champions Trophy in 2025, so they still have much to play for. In their world cup meetings, Sri Lanka marginally have the edge on New Zealand with six wins to New Zealand’s five.
